This time with someone with experiece. My wifes uncle has been around boats all his life and has bought and sold maintaned etc since he was young. Let someone who knows what to look for and has an eye for spotting problems that someone with no experience would notice.
Plus having someone who isnt so excited to buy the boat and would go into it with no emotion is a smart move.So we will look at the boat and if he thinks it is a good idea we will put a small deposit down on it and take it out for a water test. If we dont like it we will just pay to get it waterized again. If all goes well.Then looks like i found my boat.

What year 19 ft Stingray is it?

Do you know why they had to replace the lower unit?

Check our the ski locker area -- mine holds a lot of moisture there, so if I was looking at a used one I would look for any signs of mold or rot there.

small boat or big boat ,first time buyer or upgrading, its an investment anyway you look at it just be sure its what you want and can afford...

I am going to go look at the 21 foot baja. My wifes uncle basicly told me dont mess with anything under a 6 cylinder and keep to 20 feet or larger.He said this boat could be alittle under powered u we will look at it and maybe do a water test if it checks out ok.

i beleive the baja is has good power train, hull match with the 4.3L 205hp. put 10 people in it, and you may wish for more.

sounds like yer going about buying a boat in a proper way to me.......it's so easy to get stars in yer eyes when looking at all that beautiful glass. in lieu of taking a boat mech with me when i was looking at boats, i googled buying a used boat and came up with a list of things to be looking for.....then used that list one by one......usually the seller thought i was crazy.......except for the one seller that sold me his boat....he thought i was too thourgh and commented that most folks don't give a used boat the once over as much as i did.....we both agreed that i was probably getting what i wanted after all the looking i did.....it took 1 business day to do a full once over + the paperwork to buy it...... hope all goes well for ya.......

I am the proud new owner of a 1992 Baja 204 Islander. speedometer didnt work and needed the gimbar bearring?? replaced they said soon. So they took care of that and we got it for 5500.

Took it for a ride and some how got lucky with the weather. over 70 this afternoon. Will need to replace the prop just has a aluminum prop. My wifes uncle said i could burn thru 2 of those in one season on the river. So i will need to get a stainless steel prop. But it really is a solid boat from all accounts. Now it time to blow even more money getting a hitch jackets anchor ropes etc.

First project will be this weekend we are moving the driver and passengers seats about 6-8 inches back since i can barely sit in the seat while driving. LOL

Ok now i need to ask if someone has a list of must haves. Anchors jackets etc. Any tools extra drain plug etc. If there is a list thats already been posted here if not maybe be could start posting some here.

Edit also can anyone give me some reccomendations on stainless props. It a 4.3lx merc 205 hp. Dont plan on doing much skiing or tubing at all if that matters.

i moved just the drivers seat in mine, saved the rest of the space. you need all the coast guard required equipment. dock lines, bow line for launching i like twice the length of the trailer, also can be used for an short anchor line. toilet paper, paper towels in a sealed container. i carry flare gun as i boat in big water. small tool set with hand cleaner, sealed container.

i'm sure the link td put ya onto says it. but i'll reiterate.....take a boater safety class....power squadron or coastgaurd aux. in your area.....great thing to do over the winter......

maybe........i run the river too...the missouri.....it's full of crap all the time. i run an aluminum prop.......my notion being that if i hit something it'll take out my prop. but leave my drive intact. if i'm lucky......ss ones are much stronger and i believe if ya do hit something, that the hit is more likely to damage the drive with ss than with the alum. that just breaks off.......i keep a spare prop onboard with all associeted pieces for such occasions.......

Maybe I'm missing something here, but why would you "burn through" 2 aluminum props per year? If you are anticipating that the prop is going to be hitting stuff underwater, then you probably want to stick with the aluminum prop as the aluminum prop will bend/break and save your outdrive... If you have a stainless steel prop and hit something, it may transfer the damage to the outdrive.

Take the boat off the trailer and take the trailer back to the scales. This will give you a ball park figure of how much the boat weighs. If you are several hundred lbs heavy you would really need to get rid of the flotation. Hopefully you just have a very heavy trailer.

For props, I would start with the Mercury Prop selector.

You can also find local shops that are part of the Mercury loaner program so you can test before you buy.

Turning Point Propellers also has a very good selector.

It recommends a 17p for watersports or a 19p for speed. Hustler for aluminum or Express for stainless. Just make sure your RPM's stay within the recommended range for you motor.
EDIT: I just looked, and Iboats carries Turning Point props and they are on sale right now.

I think the risk of this is sometimes overblown. I personally would never run an aluminum prop on a sport boat. But, if you are worried about it, there are a lot of stainless props that come with a replaceable sacrificial hub so that you won't risk damaging the drive. Here is a pic of an Express stainless prop from Turning Point showing the separate hub.
