Going big (bigger)???

After over a year of searching, I just purchased a 2004 Honda BF25 (remote) outboard motor. I have not actually seen my new purchase. A friend in Portland (400 miles away) found it on Craigslist, had it tested/inspected for me and made the transaction.

I have a 16' aluminum fishing boat that came with a sweet little 2004 Honda BF 9.9(remote). With just me in the boat it did alright (14 mph/gps), but after adding a fishing buddy and some gear/beer, the little motor was not cutting it.

QUESTIONS- Because the two outboards are the same year and make, is it just a matter of undoing the cables and connections going to the 9.9 and plug them into the 25? I am also wondering (if it is plug & play) should I hold onto my 9.9 for the water bodies that have horse power restrictions?

SIDE QUESTIONS- The boat has a 35hp rating on it, but since that it is a 1981 rating, and would have been rated for a lighter 2 stroke, did I make the right decision to go with the 25hp 4 stroke? Could I have safely gone to a heavy 35hp?

Thanks

Re: Going big (bigger)???

Those controls should work with either engine but you will have to adjust the cables I am sure btu I am pretty surer they only make one control that covers all engines, I know for sure Yamaha is like that.

As to the HP rating, weight actually doesn't play a role in that, it is the torque the engine puts on the transom so you are good there too although you may wantt o shift some weight to the bow since the new engien will be quite alot heavier than the old one.

Moving gas and/or the battery up front will make a big difference.

Re: Going big (bigger)???

Thanks 5150abf, Adjusting the cables doesn't sound too bad. I will search for some info on this procedure, but if someone has done it, could you give me some pointers?

Would having the 25 as my main power and also having the 9.9 mounted as a kicker be ridiculous (in terms of weight)? The boat is a heavy mid 70's Meyers 16' super-pro (deep and wide). I estimate the two motors would weigh about 360 lbs. Sounds ridiculous just asking.

Ya, I think both engines is a bit of over kill and alot of weight on the back, probably wouldn't do to well.

The 25 should do a good job af trolling by itself.
