Not sure if I am in the correct forum for this question but here it goes. I have a 1982 Johnson Twin cylinder 60hp outboard. I just replaced the lower unit on this motor. I was told my replacement unit was off a 1976 55hp Johnson it has the larger gear case 4 1/8". This unit came with no prop so i bought a used 14 x 13 prop for it, My old prop would not fit because my old lower unit was a standard size. Now after a few days of getting the motor running and mounting the new lower unit i load up the wife and kids and we go to the lake to test her out. Get the boat in the water put the controller in reverse to pull out of the launch and the boat goes....... FORWARD!!!!! put in in forward and it goes in reverse. now first thing i thought was i have the wrong rotation prop. So after tooling around at a top speed of 7mph in reverse but going forward we load up the boat and head for home. I have compared the new prop to my old prop and they are the same rotation so thats not my problem. I am thinking it might be something in my lower unit causing it to rotate the wrong way I do not know much about this other lower unit just what i was told it came off off and that is a commercial grade. would a left rotation prop be what i need or is there some way i hooked up something wrong?

Re: going forward in reverse

After rotating my flywheel clockwise "the way it turns when it runs" the prop shaft is turning counter clockwise so i am assuming this is a counter rotation lower. any other way of telling or do i just need to pony up and buy another prop

Re: going forward in reverse

i purchased the unit on ebay. I dont have any problems with the unit it seems to shift fine and there are no leaks. I sent an email to the seller asking him if he knew that this was a counter rotation unit. He wrote back saying that that it was off a single engine setup. The prop that was on it was a right rotation 11 3/4 x 17 Michigan Wheel 012039. Is it possible that my motor is turning the wrong direction? or my shift cables got messed up? All that has been done to the motor is i have cleaned the carbs (one float was stuck and dumping fuel into the cylinder flooding the motor. A i put new plugs and wires on it. And of course put the new lower unit on it. Everything bolted on fine, shift linkage lined up fine. So if this is a standard rotation model as the seller assures me it is what would make it rotate incorrectly?

Re: going forward in reverse

so what i need is the shift linkage from the 76 motor to put on to my 82 right? is it possible to change the cables at the control box? My control box is the style that u lift up a small lever to Prime the motor on cold starts. thank you

Re: going forward in reverse

i originally posted this problem in the props forum, on there a guy just said that if everything is working fine just to take and switch my shifter around and it will work like always. Does he my my control arm? move it to the other side of the control box? I am very clueless here and I am not sure if I can get the linkage off the old motor. And buying another lower unit is not really an option.

Is it possible that this motor is one of a twin set and you need a prop that is revers of normal? A counter rotating motor?

Re: going forward in reverse

I was told it was off a single motor setup and that it originally had a right rotation prop on it. From what I have been told on this forum earlier that the 76 lower unit has the opposite shift linkage then my 82 did so i believe this is my problem. What I need to know, is there anything i can do at the control box with either the shifter arm or shift cable that will reverse its operation? Because I am not sure if I can get the shift linkage off the 76 motor or even if it will be compatible with my 82. Thanks guys all suggestions are much appreciated!!!

Re: going forward in reverse

The only way to correct it with that gearcase is to replace the shift linkage on your engine with the linkage from the 1976 motor.

There never was a counter-rotating motor in either series in that horsepower range.

If you were to run on a left hand propeller, the unit would not last very long because you would be running it in reverse of the design in order to go forward.

Re: going forward in reverse

Ok thank you for your help, after looking at my control box I came to the same conclusion. Any suggestions on where to find a linkage from a 1976 55hp Johnson? The seller of the lower unit sold the powerhead as well. Does anyone know what year and or horsepower might have the same linkage as the 76? thank you
