Simple answers to your questions are No and No.

But then it depends on so many variables, it is hard to answer.

A typical 21-22' boat with a V8 is going to have around a 50 gallon fuel tank. The boat will consume at least 6-7 gallons per hour at the MOST economical cruise speed. So if you move around at speed at all the longest you will be running is 8 hours.

Modern outboards are typically just as "efficient" as their i/o counterparts.

I have a 21' bowrider with a 5.7 and I'll burn about 30-40 gallons in a full 6-8 hour day of wakeboarding.

My V8 (351w) 20' runabout has a 25 gallon tank and I will go through about 20 gallons in about 5-6 hours on the water. However, that's mostly at cruise (28-30mph) with about an hour of pulling tube/slalom skiers. I don't consider it bad at all. If I had a 50 gallon tank like some have, then I could easily make it through a typical weekend on the lake on a single tank. It's not really any more/less efficient than most O/B's of similar size and HP.

if you are wanting a performance oriented hull then you may look into the baja islander line. they have a 202, that would be n your price range, and im sure you could find a good deal on a 232 if you look enough, these are going to have either a 350 mag or a 7.4. if i were going to buy it would be one with a 7.4/ bravo combo. i have a180 islander with a 5.7/alpha 1 combo and its nice in that boat ( mid to upper 50's) but if i was going to step up anymore i would want the 7.4. also everyone i have talked to says you will not use much more fuel with a 7.4 than a 5.7 and i gurantee you will be happy everytime you hit the throttle.
