Re: Going nuts here

If you're getting spark off the coil, when cranking, but not starting, I'd say It sure seems like spark plug wires to me, but I don't like just any old wires, I prefer Borg Warner deluxe metallic coil core suppression wires from Pep boys, or an equivalent type from NAPA, or Niehoff, or any other popular brand. This is a resistor (computer friendly) wire with non-corrosive metal, to metal, coil contact directly to the spark plug. They're not that much more then regular (crummy) wires. Some vehicles come standard with this type of wire. I convert to these wires on all my vehicles, you can actually feel the difference in power, & dependability in all weather.

Re: Going nuts here

Thanks all. I will be changing all that with NAPA replacement parts.
Going to get plugs, wires and coil and go from there.
The pick up coil will be last since I have to pull the dist. to replace it.

Watching.... If the new wires don't cure it ....Shift it from park to neutral when it won't start and see if it starts then let us know if it does......did you check the wires at your starter or ground by fuel tank

Re: Going nuts here

I had a neighbors truck do this same thing one morning before he went to work.
I checked it out for him and his coil wire was split and moisture was getting in there. I had just put new wires on my Duster so I gave him my old coil wire. Problem solved.

That is the first place I would look and I hope your problem is as simple.

Re: Going nuts here

Just an update.
Went out yesterday evening and it would not start.
Pulled and replaced 4 plugs, could not reach the other 4, and it started up.
I will have SIL get to the front 4 Wednesday and replace the coil and wires.
SuperNova, your guys got a trick to getting to the front 4 on this van?

Re: Going nuts here

I know on my S-10 pickup trucks with the V6, I have to go through the fender wells to get at the plugs, sometimes it helps just to lift the body a bit, with the wheels still on the ground, to get access to them. It's the only way. My previous 88' Monte Carlo SS V8 was the same way, it was way easier to do it on both vehicles this way! I don't know if this would help, or work on your van?

I'm guessing when it didn't start, you pulled off the coil wire and cranked it, to see if you had spark? If so, then you cranked it and checked spark at the plugs? I don't remember if you mentioned this?

No, but sometimes it is better to jack it up and go through the wheelwells. Other than that just diassemble as much as you have to for access.

Well, got the new plugs all in and plugged the new computer up and it runs good now.
I will wait and see what it does when it rains now.
