Ok so I have almost taken this entire engine apart and put it back together ( learned alot) so I put it out on the lake and it started up great ( just rebuilt the electrical starting system ).

I just put a new impeller in and a new thermostat

I still need to redo all the seals in the lower unit but thats for another day.

It wasn't peeing very good before the impeller and thermostat intstall and now its peeing like a champ.

So I put it on my 14-36 john boat and hit the throttle. Its running great and very fast. just like i wanted it to. I am staring at the pee while I am going full throttle for about a minute and more and more smoke started to come out of the pee holes and then all of a sudden the water just stops flowing???????????

put it in neutral and the motor is soooooo hot. I reved the engine in neutral and the pee started peeing strong and soon cooled the engine down. This happened over and over. What is going on???

Anyone want a motor in tampa? Im buying a new etec!!! (i wish)

Thanks in advance guys!

Drop the lower unit and make sure that the drive pin for the impeler is in, make sure that the copper water tube is seated in the head at the top, and put some vaseline on the grommet on the pump housing.

Did you replace the wear plate and the impeller, or just the impeller. I had a problem when I changed it in my 20HP, but it went away when I broke down and got the wear plate.

make sure there arent any bugs or crud in the intake ports for the water pump- mine had a handful of bumble bees in it and they had the water flow stopped at rpm and it was fine at idle...

Was your old impeller intact? If one of the veins was broken off and wasn't in the impeller housing, it may be lodged in the watertube/powerhead passages and flopping around to cause cooling then no-cooling condition.

My first thought was that do you have a short shaft engine on a long shaft transom? Is there enough of the lower unit under water at speed?

i had one with the same symptoms and it was the upper water tube grommet,it was old and hard and not sealing at high revs,so it was starving for water at wot.
