I would also say, not to rule out the outboards.
They are a LOT lighter then the cast iron blocks of the I.O.s>>>So you can get buy with less horse power for same performance. OR have alot MORE preformance.
As was said above, you can do more "TRIM" adjustments with an O.B..

Hey eeboater
Well I sure wish I had done what you did before buying my first used boat .( Writing a what to look for post that is ) Like yourself I am not mechanically inclined . I have another big downfall also . I usually take the word of people ... especially those that are older than me .
In my case the previous owner was in his 60's , the boat looked to be in mint condition , and when we went for a ten minute test drive , everything felt and sounded great .
The only thing that seemed a little iffy was the fact that the boat was hard to start cold . ( I figured out the proper starting technique thanks to this site , and the first 10 times out on the lake she fired right up . ) T'was Dhadley's starting tips that worked .
Now who knows .... maybe the seller of my boat was sincere when he said it runs great, and then it's time was up after I bought it .
Or perhaps a lil' white lye was involved .... I will never know .
Take the advise of all the seasoned boating vets on this site . Look for all the things that they have mentioned .
If you have a mechanic buddy bring him along with you for sure .
Most of all ..... if you do bye a boat , and it does act up on you ,and you have to take it in ... CHECK OUT THE PEOPLE THAT WILL BE SERVICING IT !
My biggest disapointment wasn't that I had to fork out big bucks for the motor . It was the fact that , 7 weeks later ... I'm still without my toy .

Good luck to you . I'll keep my fingers crossed !

When we talked to the guy selling our boat he had it at a marina and said he would be happy to take a test drive with us. We shopped around a bit and decided the next day we would drive down and see the boat (about 100 miles one way.) The next morning we called to confirm our appointment and he said he brought the boat home (seemed strange) but we said ok. he ran it on the muffs and everything seemed fine. He seemed like a great guy. He even took 500 less for the boat then he was asking for it. First time I started it on the lake it wouldnt idle and couldnt get it into gear unless I revved it in neutral and slammed it in gear. It turned out it was only the exhaust boot but I still wonder if it was acting funny and thats why he brought it home instead of taking us for a test. Honestly I would have walked away if it ran like that in front of me from lack of knowledge with boats it would have scared me away. Buying a used boat is just like buying anything used your never gonna get rid of all the risk you can just minimize it.

One tip I learned the hard way when trying out a boat: make sure the engine is cold before the demo so that you will get to witness any hard starting problems that might not show up if the engine has already been warmed up.
