I'm going to San Francisco in a couple of weeks time for a business conference. I'll be there for about a week and will hopefully get some time to look around.

I'm planning to do a proper (longer) trip to the USA in a year or so - so I'll leave it 'till then to see a whole lot of other places (...including Delaware ;) ).

But in the meantime, I always think a bit of local knowledge makes all the difference when you visit somewhere new...

So...what tips, advice etc can you give a Kiwi joker for his first trip to San Fran?...(keeping it seemly ;) ) - thanks :)

Have them move the conference to a civil and decent city.

Don't feed the panhandlers.

Please know that the rest of the country is the opposite of San Francisco.

Re: Going to San Francisco - Updated again

Be a little careful with the weather, as at that time of year you can get a little cold. If I remember correctly, when I was living out there about 5 years ago, they had snow at christmas time. Several inches just south of SF as a matter of fact. So pack accordingly. Fishermans wharf can be real entertaining, last time I was there, there was a PETA nutcase wearing a fish costume with a sign that said, "Don't Batter Me". Made me think about shooting fish in a barrel. But I digress.

Chinatown is very entertaining. If you go into the parks stay on the trails. You might see something illegal in most civilized countries.

I don't know what you are going there for but you can rent boats in the harbour that double as hotel rooms. I don't have any contacts for this but it looked like a really cool way to hang out in SF. Not cheap but the best place to be IMHO. Bring your camera, it is a great place to shoot pics. I will say that on weekends the cable cars have long lines you will have to wait on at the turnarounds. If you can get on midpoint. I saw lines of several hundred people to get on the cablecars so I hired a cab.

SF is a big city, where are you staying? SF is not my favorite city in CA. But you could do worse. It is a beautiful city, and very expensive. Depending on time of year it can cost a ton to get a bad hotel room.

IMHO if you have a few days to yourself, rent a car get on hwy 80 east and drive 4.5hrs. You will see one of the most beautiful parts of this country. You will drive thru Sacramento state capital home of the governator, and end up in Truckee, Lake Tahoe. The drive after Sacramento is breathtaking. The people are genuine, and there is enough to do for a month. It is a place that everyone should try to go to at least once in their lives. It has had a lifelong impact on my life, that is how breathtaking I found it. If there is anyway you could extend a couple of days, you are as close to heaven as I have ever seen. But that is just my simple minded view of things. I lived for two years in Auburn, about 1.5 hours west of Tahoe, (down the mountain). I am not as well traveled as many on this board but I have seen a majority of this great land of ours, and this place (Lake Tahoe area) is #1 on my list of places to go in the USA.

Yeah. Don't listen to the negative comments about CA or San Francisco. I understand Roscoe's comments (sort of), but there are decent people everywhere in this country. Most International visitors to the US rave about it, Americans too. Yes, it is known for liberal politics etc. but the city is absolutely beautiful and from there you can see many awesome natural sites as well.

Crab's list is very good. It just depends on how much time you have. I agree a trip to Sausalito (not an island, but town on other side of the Golden Gate) and the Muirwoods are very good. Hanging around Fisherman's wharf etc. is fine too if you're stuck downtown. Also, if you snow ski or just like the mountains and if you have a fee weekend you could make a run to Lake Tahoe etc.

Have a great trip and keep asking questions. There is literally everything in this beautiful state; even ice fishing like in Roscoe's :p :p :D . Mountains, ocean, desert and all in between.

62_KIWI

You might want to tour the Fisherman's Warf area and take a couple of boat tours. First try take the "San Francisco Bay" tour, which includes going under the Golden Gate Bridge and second, take the "Alcatraz Prison" tour, also reached by boat.

The weather here has been magnificent lately. Yesterday, as nearly all week, it has been in the mid-70's in San francisco and higher elsewhere in the Bay Area.... :D

The highlight of your trip could be experiencing one of the California favorites, an EARTHQUAKE!!! These always make for a very memorable trip..

...Bob in Calif...

Don't get me wrong, San Fran is a neat area with lots to offer.
Flew in one time for a wedding, couldn't wait to leave, too many weird people there. Remember, I'm the guy that left boring old Milwaukee for the peaceful country life in the northwoods.

Re: Going to San Francisco - Updated again

A big thank you all for your comments, tips, suggestions and laughs... I'm going to print this thread and take it with me.

Crab - Sounds really good, a great first hand description, thanks. Another entry for "Crab Bait's Guide to the USA" ?. I'll let you know how I get on. Delaware the #1 state except Wednesdays, I'll be there (tell them to stock up on hot sauce) ;)

Pointer94 - thanks for the pointer about the weather. I hope the PETA guy's still there - that sounded pretty funny and I'm hoping to go to Fisherman's Wharf. I'm not sure where we're staying but it's all been booked. Thanks for all the info.

QuietCat - thanks for the advice, sounds great.

Bob - thanks, we get earthquakes here in NZ too. Alcatraz is on my list as well - my sister visited there a couple of months ago. Sounds good.

AK Chappy - I have one partial weekend there but want to use that to see around the city. Thanks very much for the kind offer anyway.

San Francisco is just about the most photogenic city I've ever been to.

Golden Gate National Park
Muir Woods National Park
Fisherman's Wharf
Telegraph Hill
If you have an extra day, take a drive down the coast on Hwy 1 to Monterrey & Carmel.
The wind is always blowing. Gets pretty chilly at night & most days are beautiful & mid-70's.
Chinatown is not a tourist trap - take a meal there, I swear some of those restaurants have no English-speaking workers or customers.
Don't forget the cable cars, you won't see that anywhere else.

If you're up for good inexpensive Italian food, go to a restaurant called VIVA on the corner of Columbus and Grant Sts. Also a good garlic filled restaurant is just across the street from Viva called "The Stinking Rose." Two good places to eat.
