Hi guys
Funny how fate works. I was not looking for a boat, then this deal came along. This is my first boat and first experince with a 2 cycle engine ( have worked & taught automotive. The deal a 1973 Starcraft Capri 14'/ 1973 Gator Trailer/ 1973 Eveinrude 65 (model 65373) motor needs work and need cosmetic work to boat. ($300.00 for all)

Here is what I know so far: powerpack missing, one coil missing, air cleaner missing. Engine not locked up does have some compression only turned over by hand. Transmisson does engage. Steering moves fairly easy. May have been out of water 2 to 5 years. Tags on trailer expired in 2000. Last state registration on boat 97.

I found this board while researching the value of the boat. I have spent several hours reading old post. I am going to order the oweners manual, parts catelog, and service manual from Cook's next week.

I have read some of the old post's they have been very informative.

Now for the questions

Where can I find the powerpack? ( In my searching I saw a couple of sites that had them but had a brain fart and doe not remenber the names)

Do I need to repalce all three coils? I have not test the other two yet.

In one post yall mentioned fogging the cylinders, What do I use?

I plan on cleaning carbs or rebuild if needed, compression check, Changing all fluids(there is not fuel tank). Some one mentioned doung a reseal on the lowe unit(is that in the manual or does it have to go to the shop?)

Is there any thing else I should check or do?

I am not pushed to get it in the water however I have limited funds to spend, I would rather have everything right rather than get stranded.

Hugh, the lower unit reseal should only be necessary if you find water in the gear lube when you change it. I would at least hook a battery up to the beast and get a cold compression test to get an idea of the motor's health. Fogging the cylinders is a storage issue. You may consider giving each one a healthy shot of WD-40 before any spinning with the starter. I would check the compression, and go from there. If you need parts, there's always eBay if all else fails. But if your motor has been cannibalized for parts, ya gotta wonder what kind of shape it's in. Good luck! :)

Look like a pretty good deal. You might check EBAY for an original service manual for the engine. That would help a bunch with getting the motor back in shape. If you need another 1973 65Hp Evinrude let me know, I have one that ran good when taken off a trashed boat. Has the factory power tilt. Might be expensive to ship, but I am in OKlahoma.

Arlan

If the motor has been sitting for an unknown period of time you should definately change the water pump impeller.

If you do proceed with this engine, replace the impeller by all means. Look for things making a home in the water paths. I would check all rubber components including fuel lines and diaphrams. Also check electrical components for corrosion and brittleness.

Just rebuild the carb. It will force you to tear down completely and the kit is most likely inexpensive..
