Good Deal...oops

well, I finally did it. I bought my first boat, a 79 Del Marina. It was a real steal for a 15' Tri-Hull with a 50 horse Mercury, fishfinder, bimi  and trolling motor and oh yes...a new trailer. Took it out with my son for two days of playing. It was too cold to catch any fish, (at least that's my story) but we had a blast playing..in rain and snow and occasional sunlight.

Just a small issue...ran great, electric start and allot of fun. Tried both the torque and speed props..really cool for $1000. Just a wobbly front seat...might need to reinforce the floor a bit......

Just a crack...I'll cut it out a little and see...

well...no wood left..that can't be good...let's look at the back section....

Ouch..I'll make the hole alittle bigger..

looks like allot of mulch that used to be plywood and an unbelievably saturated bunch of foam...

Well, I've been doing some reading and today I'll be cutting the entire floor out, digging out all the foam, checking the stringers and transom and will replace any rotted wood stringers or transom, put in a new floor (epoxy coated of course) and re-glass the floor. It also give me the opportunity to design, build and install a new dash and control panel, add a permanent gas tank, oil injection and reconfigured storage, a bilge pump and new seats won't hurt anything either. Sooo, my "great deal" will double in cost, take a month of work and I'll have a blast doing it....what a deal...I'm already having fun.....stay tuned sports fans

Oops. I got a bit agressive and cut a 2" slot all the way thru the bottom while grinding out the old flooring. How do I patch this. there is a 2" slot thru my gelcoat on the bottom of the hull?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to Boat Restoration and Building dbergman!

Search this forum for "saw hull accident". You're by no means the first to have done it! :)
It'll go away pretty quick since you'll be into glassing anyway.

If I was to repaint the whole boat to get a white and blue scheme, how much time an money am I talking? Also, what is the better finnished product, sprayed or rolled and tipped?

One gallon of each color will give you enough paint. The sprayed finish will be the smoothest in my opinion.

I agree with studlymandingo. With the every best and most expensive of paints, you can get a finish with the roll & tip method that's almost as good as a sprayed finish. Spraying allows you to use less expensive or better paints. If at all possible, spray.

Re: Good Deal...oops

would the trihull look funky if I left the bottom cream gel coat alone on the very bottom and bow that would rub on the shoreline during beaching and just add white above that point and blue for the top cap? Don't know if you can tell from the earlier pictures so here is another. What do you think?
Second question. I would like to get rid of the back breaking two gas cans and am debating adding a permanent tank (12 Gallon) to my rebuild and am considering adding an aftermarket oil injection system. From the reserch I've done to date, I'm getting mixed readings on to add or not to add an injection system vs. manual oil mixing. What is the consensis for adding an Autoblend with my rewiring and whaere would I find one?
