Good Deal or Bad Deal?

Hello,
I am currently selling my 1999 Xpress 1756 Boat with a console and 1998 Mercury 75HP Motor. It is in great shape. Now the question is. I have someone that approached me with a possible trade. He has a 1995 Champion 181DC with a 1995 Mercury 150 HP XR6 Motor. He stated that he would trade straight title for title. I am not real sure about this. I have never owned a Bass Boat or for that matter a fiberglass boat. I don't see many Champion Bass Boats on my lake. One concern is the motor on his, he stated that the compression is 105 across the board. I don't really know much about this but that seems low and I don't want to trade for a boat that I am going to have to drop a ton of money on in the near future. Do you all think that this is a good trade for me and if you can give me any insight on this particular boat that would be awesome. I am totally new to this. So any help is great. Thanks ahead of time, Rich

Re: Good Deal or Bad Deal?

First question: since you are selling your current boat, do you want another boat, or do you want money?

Welcome aboard LE! What did you not like about your last boat that makes you want to change boats?

Thanks, I am looking for a little bit bigger boat and a smoother ride. I am just concerned about a older fiberglass boat. I know a 1995 don't sound really old but I am not really sure how the Champions hold up.

Can you post pics of your boat and his boat? Or give us a link.

a friend has a 10+ yr old Champion and he loves it and brags about it's quality. He said if he won the nice, new, big$$$$$ tournament grandprize boat this year he would sell it and keep his Champion! Why does this guy want to trade you for a smaller boat?

He stated that he is just wanting to trade cause he takes his grandson out all the time fishing and wants a boat that has higher sides on it to prevent him from falling in.

The boat looks to be well maintained, but it does have carpet, so investigate and make sure there are no soft spots. If you feel comfortable with the deal and you want a bass boat, go for it. Looks like the trailer its sitting on is in good shape to.

Do you have pics of your boat? You can have the motor checked out by a qualified mechanic to insure it is good to go. Its worth the couple hundred bucks even if the deal doesn't go through. You can fix many things on a boat pretty cheap, but the motor is a different story.

You want to upsize by one foot? Is there really that much more room in the Champion?

Apples and oranges JoLin. The Xpress is aluminum. This is a tough one. Shouldn't have any trouble unloading that Xpress as they're always in high demand, at least around here, but the Champion does look very nice, and if that's what you want it would save you a lot of hassle to swap. My main concern is the same as yours. 105 seems a little low. I don't know man, that's a tough call. I know I'm a lot of help LOL. Why don't you start a thread in the Merc section and ask about the outboard? Mention the compression specifically, and ask whether there are any issues indemic to that vintage Merc. Where are you by the way?
