I love Craigslist. I have bought and sold from good people, and idiots like you mention. Went to look at an aluminum canoe that had a "little bitty hole," (presumably a missing rivet) and I found a 3 inch wide gash that literally looked like it was made with an axe. But, I get enough deals off of there that I look at it as if I have to sort through the crap to get the good stuff.

What are you doing looking for a color selector? I know a whole bunch of people who will either give those away from free, or keep them on the same shelf in the garage as the helicopter lure, and all the other Roland Martin gimmicks. They will give you one reading on one side of the boat, and another on the other.

My experience with craigslist LATELY hasn't been good. I've also bought items off of craigslist, I even got a free item one time. As I mentioned earlier everything is located out of town, 50 to a nearly 100 miles for me. Our local section on Craigslist still hasn't picked up any advertisers. Even at that they added 2 cities one being ours and then the neighboring city which is 40 miles away if not better, so you half to click on both cities to search, Gadsden/Anniston areas.

What are you doing looking for a color selector? Things don't come free for me, I always seem to half to pay. I like gadgets , like that barometer I've talked about in the past, maybe I'm a nerd. I've read alot of reviews on the Color Celector and alot of people swear by them, then you have a few that dislike them, and say the aint worth a flip. Have you ever thought that the different reading from one side to the other side of the boat was do to the shadow of the boat? Now they have the digital Color Celectors, which they might or might not work. I've never owned one so I wouldn't know, that's why I try to read lagitimate reviews on anything that I am looking into purchasing.

I know what you mean about the Gadsden/Anniston thing. I am about a dead split between Gadsden, Chattanooga, and Atlanta, so I check all three Craigslists regularly. Trust me, there are the same idiots in Atlanta, and Chattanooga as well. I have wasted time, and lost some money on idiots, but in the long run, I have come out ahead.

Hopefully if you ever start dealing with that website you'll have better luck then I have had. I've had 3 bad dealings with Ebay, 2 purchasing, and one selling. A man advertised a luggage rack for a Honda motorcycle, he said it would fit a 1970 Honda 350.....Guess what? It didn't. I turned around and resold the rack on ebay for $50 plus shipping, then the guy never gave me any feedback . Then before all of that I bought a starter for the same motorcycle, it is junk as far as I recall. A man won the bid on an item I had up for auction, he never contacted me, I emailed him 2 or 3times with no response.

Bassboy I read the thread on BBC about the Color C Lector. It about compares to the negative reviews I've read about the device. It's just one of those things if I get a chance to pick one up on sale I might go for it, I'll half to travel to bass pro to get one though.

Oh by the way I didn't go on to craigslist at all today. Like I said, I'm going to stay away. I was very tempted to call the employer of the person who threatened me and tell them about how he wanted me to meat him on their company property to fight. It would be my luck though I would probably call up and find out the goof ball that threatened me turns out to be the manager.

What axles do you have under your truck? What transmission do you have in your truck? Do you know the gear ratios? Maybe your a car buff and you actually know the answers. However, just because they are selling it doesn't mean they know everything about it.

I find my best deals buying from someone who DOESN'T know what they have. Your the expert, you should know if its worth your money when you inspect the product. I once bought a '93 S10-Blazer for $50 sight unseen by asking questions. Everything worked perfect, ecxept for the really loud knocking noise coming from the engine. Yep the engine was toast (spun #1 rod bearing), however I simple swapped in another and 2 years later my son still drives the truck.

If the seller is unwilling to answer your questions, they may have something to hide or maybe they just dont ahve a clue how to answer the question. REask the question, this time tell them how to find the answer. If they dont answer, then politely walk away.

I'm done with craigslist. No ifs ands or buts about it. I haven't been on the website for my own use sense before the last time I updated this thread. Only reason I was on there otherwise is because some iboat's member may of posted a link to it on their thread while talking about a boat they were interested in.

I have an 8.8 limited slip rear end with 4:10 gears, and I have an M50D-R1 5 speed tranny in my truck. I can tell you the size and brand of every tire every vehicle i have ever owned has had on it. And yes I do learn all I can about what I own and what I am looking at buying. I feel it makes me better at owning, selling and buying. Most times when I am looking at buying a truck at a dealer I just tell the salesman to "Shoosh" since I know more about it then he does.

In my opinion if you don't know what you are selling, be honest. If your friend gave it to you and you never ran it. tell me. that's fine.

I agree CL ca be a major pain in the arse! I have had many scammers and idiots. I have been trying to sell a 12 foot boat with 7 horse motor. I have pictures and tell it like it is. 12 foot boat antique motor. Good boat, motor runs, No trailer. It is priced reasonable and I expect people to make offers. I usually end up with ididots who think I should sell it for 100 bucks or people who want to complain about the price instead of making an offer. Then you have people who ask if it has items like a fish finder, trolling motor, trailer... I have had 4 people stand me up, one guy said he was coming with money. $500. to be exact, never showed up 2 nights in a row. Told him a courtesy call would have been appreciated and he called me a ****** along with a bunch of other comments.

On the brighter side, Just bought a great boat on CL. Can't wait for the snow to melt! Dealing with this fella was pleasurable, When he showed me the boat I made an offer he countered and we settled. The way it should be! No BS!

I don't mind shopping on CL but I hate selling! At least while shopping you can pick out the idiots who cannot spell a single word and have no idea what something might be worth.

frustration comes from trying to change other people when I need to just change the way I relate.

sometimes you just have to pounce on craigslist and get there quick,
other times it works out to wait for something to be re-listed at lower prices.

its a raw experience , meeting and dealing with people you might never otherwise cross paths with, I've met some trainwrecks thru CL.

I just find it works out for the best to laugh situations off rather than take the bait.

I have dealt with Craigslist a lot. I have purchased my truck, boat and other things off there with no issues. I have also tried to, and successfully sold items on there as well.

One thing I note from the people on there, is they are either scammers or fail to read things.

I had tried to sell my car on there. I had COUNTLESS calls and emails from people asking me questions, that were already answered in the ad. Things like what color was it (when I had PICTURES of it), what options it had (I put up a FULL description of everything), what mileage it had (of course it was listed) and even what was my asking price. I had more than half of my calls and emails go like this, and it made me wonder if the people even read the ad. It can get annoying from time to time.

I have also noticed that there are a LOT of people who will email and ask questions, just to email and ask questions. I am trying to give a boat away for free. I have recieved easily 200 (yes 200) emails and calls about it. There has been ONE person who came and looked. ONE single person out of 200+ that has even come to look.

Craigslist can be a great resource, but it seems the majority of buyers and sellers (buyers mainly) have the energy for the initial email, and thats the end of that!

EDIT: I will say this to the OP. When dealing with a cheap item (I would consider $150 cheap for a boat) the answer will be vague a lot of times. I know when I get questions regarding my boat (being given away) a lot of times I don't have the answer. I don't live near it, and don't intend to drive there to answer a simple question on something that I'm asking next to nothing (or nothing) for. Now granted, I will not just avoid the persons question, and will explain why I don't/wont have the answer, but some might not be as nice, lol!

I found a old mercury fuel tank like the one that came with my boat on craigslist for 25 bucks and I plan to go get it tuesday. Its located 50 miles away . If I didnt want to go for a little ride I wouldnt go. Guy says it doesnt leak and I saw a picture of it......we will see.

I've had pretty decent luck selling and buying on Craigslist. I pay close attention to what types of questions I have on ads and also on the responses I get on my ads and translate them into updated descriptive content on my ads. If you take the time to create a robust ad with decent pictures (the key word is DECENT!) usually the responses are pretty positive.

I posted an ad for my '70 Cadillac convertible in November '08 on a late Monday night and it was sold by 8am the next morning with minimal haggles. I posted my '72 Olds Wagon and got good responses but pulled the ad later deciding to keep it for a bit.

In Sep '08 I purchased my '70 Evinrude Explorer off Craigslist with good results and finally, several weeks ago, I sold my 25' '86 Bayliner inspite of the bad economy. I placed the ad midday on a Friday, got a couple of calls on it and scheduled one person to see it on Saturday. He emailed later that night cancelling. I went back and updated the ad at 10:30pm that same night and it sold the next day to someone who saw the revised ad Saturday morning.

One of the key things I always include is a polite but pointed reference to scammers and flakes. It indicates I'm no fool and seems to minimize the looky-loos that aren't serious.

All in all, Craigslist is pretty valuable. I just wish there was one big Craigslist site that allows you to search ALL of Craigslist cities, no matter how far away, rather than having to conduct individual searchs by city. Now THERE is a pain in the ***!
