Hey mike,
I just used piece of pipe, cut the notches out, and used pipe wrench to get the carrier off.
You may give it a shot before you get the expensive tool.

peter
I used to own the mercruiser one, but I imagine it is very simular. I switched jobs about 6 monthes ago and time like this make me really misss the access to the machine shop I had at old place. I did pick up the seal the other day when I was at my local dealer...that is 1st step.
the new seal and old have different part numbers. DonS posted the new seal number. I wrote it down but cant find it, the seal installation tool number changed a year or so ago. make sure you use the new one or modify the old one. the old seals ar4e junk and were for many years. its odd volvo dropped the ball that long but they did. its hard to tell a customer on his 3rd or 4th drive failure due to bad seals that volvo aint covering squat and your on your own. thats why I figgured out a cure once the unit was out of warrenty. but I did get the procedure down to an hour or so.
Peter,

Please tell me a bit more about the tool you made. I did not realize it is supposed to be torqued to 200 ft lbs!! Did you use about a 3 inch diamemter pipe and then cut notches for the 4 spokes? Attach the tool near where the 4 bolt holes are in the carrier? Did you have trouble torquing it tight enough? I have a welder and was thinking of attaching a piece of steel so that i could use my torque wrench to verify it is installed to correct torque. Thanks for the help!
Hi Everyone.

Thanks for the great info, but I'm a little confused and just want to get this straight.

I have a 97 Laron SEI186, 4.3L GL, Volvo Penta SX Cobra. I live in MN and run only in fresh water. The boat does not sit in the water when not in use. Also, it does not get a ton of hours put on each season. Is this issue a concern with my outdrive also?

I am the third owner of this boat and I've had it for 4 years and I've never done anything to the outdrive other than drain and refill every season with synthetic gear lube and pull out and inspect ujoints and grease the gimball bearing. I have never had any water in the gear lube at the end of the season.

Also how do I tell if my outdrive is just an SX, SX-M, SX-C1, SX-CT1 or SX-RT1?

Is there any way to tell if the pshaft seal has already been updated w/o much tear down? Does the carrier need to be removed first?

Can someone identify what it is that we are talking about in the diagram in the link below? What Ref# is the carrier and the pshaft seal in question?

http://volvopentaparts.stemtostern.com/VolvoDiagrams/ShowAssembly.asp?ID=sxsv8

Thanks everyone! Really appreciate all the info you guys have!

John
its item #11. unless it was repaired during the warranty period (a log is kept at volvo re all warranty work) you will have no way of knowing short of stumble on the repair invoice.
cant give an opinion on fresh water operated units only.
the drive model is stamped on the drive plate, usually pinned to the port side of the drive.
