Just hooked the starter all back up. Still no dice. ..

I'm lost right now. I brought a negative wire straight to the case to see if it was getting a bad ground and it still wouldn't go

Right now im not sure if I have something wired wrong or if this solenoid is bad or what.

Testing around with it, I grounded the casing again and jumped the two big posts on the solenoid to test the starter and it worked. But quit after a bit. I then noticed it had gotten very hot underneath where the solenoid cap sits. My therm read 162 degrees.

After I jumped the posts it read 12v on both big posts. Does it have some sort of internal holding contact inside the solenoid?

Now you may have a bad solenoid yours is odd the way it grounds.Jumping the big posts bypasses the solenoid your starter is good. Just had to make sure you had power where you needed it first.

Is this whole assembly considered the solenoid? If not, how in the hell do you go about removing the wires going through without damaging them

So you ever seen a guy rebuild his solenoid?

There's not much to them. The bottom I realized gets energized and turns into a big magnet to lift the starter onto the fly wheel.

Now the odds of this working when I'm done? Probably slim to none. But it's worth s shot.

Well tried to upload the video. But looks like the coil is back in good working condition. The plunger that springs the starter up shoots right up.

The rest of the solenoid is just contacts. I'm going to clean those up and see what happens!

Holy cow and a half.

Just finished putting everything back together.

Took apart the old solenoid, cleaned up contacts. Had to take a few windings off the coil to have enough wire where previous wires, [I think this was my whole problem]. Heat shrink tubing on wire. Soldered a new wire in for one side. Put back together, and tried it. ....

Didn't work. Starter acted like it was in a bind.

Mental note: I took that top off previously. So I dig back into the starter. Went ahead and took emery cloth and cleaned the armature. Had to solder a wire back on for one of the brushes, and put heat shrink on several wires where the old cloth sheath had worn off from the previous 39 years of use. ..haha

Put everything back together. An just bench tested it, and holy hell. I've never seen this starter crank so fast!

Learned alot along the way, and looking good as far as it working!

Alright, now for the real test. About to throw it in!

Wish me luck!
