Hi,
I'm in the process of rebuilding my 1986 OMC/Chevy 5.0L engine and need to order some parts. Can you recommend some places with a large inventory so I can order all I need in one place?
Thanks

Thank you very much. You guys rock. As for a place to rebuilding the engine or purchase a new one, what do you recommend? My block was cracked near the head on the port side, should I replace the entire main block or should a weld be OK?
Thanks

Welding is Not a Good Idea,......

It takes More Labor to do it,.....
And,......
The Block is already severely Distorted in the area of the Crack, from the Ice Expansion.......

305 Blocks are a Dime a Dozen,...... Don't waste your Time trying to Weld it.......

I'm checking out Rapido. I see 2 types of 5.0L engines: 1-piece and 2-piece rear main seal. What's the difference? How do I know which one I need? Sorry for all the questions, I just can't wait to get my boat in the water:)

Chevy went to the 1 piece rear main seals in 1987,......
So,..... Your's Should be a 2 piece......

But,.... I'd Pull it,+ Look before I bought a New Motor......

Now is the perfect time for a 350 upgrade.

I heard people talked about upgrading from 305 to 350 . What's the reason? More power? Any other advantages? Do I need new parts (carb, outdrive, prop, etc?) if I swap the engine block?

Externally, these two engines are the same, so all of your bolt-ons (starter, alternator, manifolds, carb...) are interchangeable. Yes there is more power, especially bottom end torque with the 350. There is no difference in weight, and you should not see any significant change in fuel consumption ( unless you start to play with your new found power). You will need to either re-gear the drive or replace the prop to keep your WOT RPM within spec.

Do you know what gear ratio your drive is now?

What pitch prop are you currently running?

305 blocks are a dime a dozen. I wouldnt even try to reweld the old block. think of it as a anchor now. all your stuff will bolt on to the 350 block.
Peeosnally I put a 351 in my buddys bayliner which had a 5.0 and its a little better off the line but its not any faster than my 5.0 ford so i dont see where the extra cubic inches helped him.

Rob,

You are talking Ford, we are talking Chevy. The 305 does not breathe very well because it's narrower bore partialy shrouds the intake valves. The move to the 350 does more than justgive you a few more cubes. It uncovers the intake valves thus, a big difference in power.
