If you want to use motor oil you must use a non-detergent one. Happy hunting for that. Myself I would just use TC-W3. It burns cleaner, doesn't leave deposits, and is actually made for an outboard instead of the crankcase of a car.
OMC changed the oil mix on their older post war J/E engines from 16:1 to 24:1 in the early 60s, as long as you used good oil (they named a couple now obsolete ones). Unfortunately, I'm not sure that applied to the Gale engines too (your Goodyear is a Gale).
I remember reading somewhere that 16:1 was to protect against overcooling which was rampant on the older engines. It could have been AOMCI.org. You might want to ask there as well about going to 24:1 if it's a real problem.
