I own a good running 1950 Goodyear 5 hp. The Decal on the engine says to use sae 30 weight oil, 8 ounces to 1 gallon of gas. I mixed a normal bottle of 2 cycle oil in the right proportions and when running the engine seems to smoke olot. Should I use 30 weight oil or use 2 cycle oil? What are the pros and cons of each?

If it says use 30 wt I would use that. 8 oz to a gallon seems like a lot. My 6hp evinrude uses 16 oz per 6 gallons. It might be using 2 cycle it it too rich.

You can use either 30W dino juice or TCW-3 outboard oil, just use the proportion the instructions recommend. TCW-3 is cleaner for the environment and you could probably run it on a little leaner mixture, but if it calls for 8 oz. use 8 oz. Reason for this? Some of the older outboards were made with bushings instead of bearings...bushings do the same job but need some form of lubricant to work properly...a thin layer of lube helps the bushing act like a bearing if you use the right recommended fuel/oil mix...If not you run the risk of seizing it. Probably wouldn't hurt to decarbon that little gem with some Seafoam...it's almost a decade older than me so it's gotta have some carbon buildup.

If you want to use motor oil you must use a non-detergent one. Happy hunting for that. Myself I would just use TC-W3. It burns cleaner, doesn't leave deposits, and is actually made for an outboard instead of the crankcase of a car.

OMC changed the oil mix on their older post war J/E engines from 16:1 to 24:1 in the early 60s, as long as you used good oil (they named a couple now obsolete ones). Unfortunately, I'm not sure that applied to the Gale engines too (your Goodyear is a Gale).

I remember reading somewhere that 16:1 was to protect against overcooling which was rampant on the older engines. It could have been AOMCI.org. You might want to ask there as well about going to 24:1 if it's a real problem.
