I have an old Seabee outboard model #2G3, serial number 120193. Hoping to find out the year it was built. It is blue and silver in color. Belonged to my father. Haven't tried to start it in years.

Re: Goodyear outboard

That's a 5HP made between 1947-48. It was manufactured by the Gale Products Division of the Outboard Motor Corporation. Thus, in reality it is a rebranded Evinrude.

My infor shows that as a 47. I have a 48 See Bee 5hp in my collection at the momment. Direct Drive, alternate firing twin cylinder, uni-block design. They are die-hards.

Re: Goodyear outboard

I have a '48 as well. Gales's were first rate. All the new stuff got tried out there before they incorporated the technology into Evinrude. Thus, they were always state-of-the-art.

And the subject of much mis-information and old-wives tales. Here is a quiz for you: Name a feature that was first used on Gales and later incorporated into Evinrudes and/or Johnsons.

I'll give the first answer. The fuel pump and single hose tank. But that is only partly true, because E/J sold it as an accessory at extra cost.

Next...?

Re: Goodyear outboard

I have quite a few books on Outboards, and often reseach them when its raining and can't go out in the boat. I can remember reading a list of the Gale firsts, but can't put my hands on the document right now. And since my memory is failing, I have to make a guess.

Thru-hub exhaust.

A Gale as others said and the subject of much mis-information as FR noted. Pay attention if FR favors you with an answer---he is THE Gale man.

Nor is it the 'same' as Evinrude or Johnson even though it was an OMC product. Some parts were universal with OMC but Gales of that era were very definitely Gales own designs though some parts were shared with other OMC engines. Your engine is the famous Gale 'wedge' design. Frankly it was at least as good as its siblings of the time and some--myself included--liked them better. It's not at all uncommon to revive an old Gale of that era without even needing parts! As I did with a 3 horse '48 model several months ago.

Re: Goodyear outboard

My 1948 had sat for 50 + years is a garage or barn. It is the ignition setup (center magnet) just prior to the more common and universal OMC ignition. The coils were fine. The tank was drained ad dry as well as the carburetor. Cleaned the points and poured in some fuel and away she went. Runs great! To date that is my easiest resurrection.

Re: Goodyear outboard

The experimental thing probably has some truth just like Oldsmobile and Cadillac. It is my belief that the bigger part of the story is that Gale was a way to introduce an economy line that could also be sold to catalogue/private label companies without using the Johnson and Evinrude names behind them. No one could really say the Montgomery Ward is really an Evinrude, similar features yes, but not the same. Before Gale, they were starting to do that with the Elto brand. I guess they decided not to tarnish the Elto name ;)

Nope, Gale never had it. But Evinrude invented and patented it long before Merc made it so famous. Evinrude didn't use their patented design. In fact, they didn't use any thru-hub exhaust till 1968.

Re: Goodyear outboard

I suppose there probably is a manual for it, costing more than the motor is worth. www.outboardbooks.com. I have one (the book) and it really isn't worth the price. I suggest going to your local library and see if they have an old generic outboard repair manual first.

As for what the motor is worth, probably a lot less than you think. In unrestored, non-running condition, probably around fourty bucks. First you have to find somebody interested in it. That really isn't too hard to do, there are a lot of us nuts around.

You might want to visit www.aomci.org Maybe even attend a local meet. You might even become one of us "nuts". Careful, it's incureable.
