I have a 93 Rude tracker 40 hp on a sun tracker pontoon boat. Sometimes the tach seems to be reading correctly. And other times it will show like 8000rpm when cruising. And the needle will sometimes float around like it has no idea where its suppose to be. Any ideas to the cause of this? Im trying to figure out the proper prop pitch for my motor, and I really need to know the correct RPM. Thanks

No doubt you've already made sure the connections on the tach are secure.

Now look in the FAQ section of iboats, find the thread on how to test your rectifier.

im assuming the rectifier is working as the battery charges great when the engine is running... is there more tests that need to be done to the rectifier?

Re: goofy tachometer...

Could be just an old tach..... there is an adjustment screw on the back of the tach. Noite the position it's on (probably #6) and move the adjustment around a little (not 360*) and reset it to where it was. Sometimes a little corrosion will set in on the pot and cause an erractic tach.

I will give that a shot. Thanks!
