When I get back to messing with my boat I have to wire my fuel tank gauge back up, the wiring was in bad shape so I pulled it out. How can I wire it back up so that it works when the key is turned on?

My other question is asked alot on here but I want to be sure. I got my new service book in yesterday, a nice catch I'll say. Skimming through the pages I saw the diagram of stator and timer base, and it said 8 poles. This is on 1977 Evinrude 85hp. The original tachometer in the dash had a little knob thingy with settings 1-4 on it. It's Greek to me since I hear alot of talk about poles and that most OMC's are 12 poles.

Help point me in the right direction, and I'm looking at getting new gauges so I'd like to have an idea where to begin. Thanks in advance as always!

The switch on the back of the tach is used to set it to match the number of pulses/poles of your motor. A stator will put out one pulse for each pair of poles. In your case the 8 pole stator will put out 4 pulses per revolution so the tach should be set to position 4.

Mikey,

Is it 8 pole...I always thought it was 12...and in another thread I was told it was 6. I am about to lose my mind. Where did ya get the service manual?

Mark, I ordered it from marineengine.com
The diagram shows the components of Magneto Type C.D. Ignition Timer and Alternator, and it shows illustration of alternator stator windings and says 8 POLES.

This book is well worth it's price I'll admit. I'd like to order the owner's manual and parts book too.

I had heard the 12 and 6 pole setting thrown around alot also, my guess is it's got something to do with # of cylinders.

Re: got a couple gauge questions

Hi OBJ, nothing new right now, just trying to get things in order still. The gauges I got on this boat are just as old (1980) and some of the wire had seen better days. I'm just wanting to wire them back up right, not just jimmy-rig them. I got the tilt tube out finally, it was bent and was a challenge to get out. I ordered a new tach, should get it next week. I gotta go work on finishing up the tilt tube install here in a few, just got a couple alignment issues to work out then I'll be done with that.

OBJ, I need some help with this tilt tube. I've got the new one in through the starboard side of motor, but with just myself doing this it's being a hassle getting the port side holes lined up so I can finish sliding the tube through so I can bolt everything back up. Do you have any good tips?
