I have a 24ft.pontoon boat powered by a 95 model special 88. At WOT it seems to be under a heavy load running approx.12 to 15 mph. The prop is 14"x 13 pitch. I have been told that the pitch should be 9 or 10. The motor runs fine. I sure would appreciate the input on this. I bought a tach today and will install it tomorrow, but, just listening to the motor,I can tell it's not achieving full RPM's.

enim,

That's a pretty good load for that 88.

You are on the right track, by getting a tach.

That will tell you alot.

eminnhahohohblahahaha

a higher pitch is only for speed it wont give you much torque because the engine has a harder time to turn it. so a pitch of 9 or 10 would be a wise
choice for heavy loads also make sure you have a smaller diameter

arent pontoon boats light? aluminum pontoons usually, as far as I know ... shouldnt an 88 rip one of those things along at a pretty good clip? you dont have a lot of wieght (well, unless you load it down with a dozen party animals and a few kegs of beer, but you should just be chugging along anyway then, lol)
Down in disney world, they had a 20 or 22 foot pontoon with a 40 horse on it, and it moved right along, we could easily smoke those little kids in the fifteen horse bathtub boats they were passing off as mini speedboats

I have a 20 ft. pontoon pushed by a 65hp merc. It had a 101/2x13 prop. Couldn't get over 4600 rpm. I put on a 121/4x 9 now runs up to 5200 and takes off better
