I might not have read it right, but I got the impression that he did NOT have the guy come and install the keel guard.

Re: got a leak and can't find it , help

im going to have to read this one several times.........

but......first of all........about the creeper....the latter enjoy it more than the former......:D :D

ok......the water drips are the intrusion........you said a few things that im worried about........nothng you did wrong......but man......thats an expencive boat! :D.

ok.....lets go over the "crushed glass section of the hull"......is this where he repaired the hull and applied the keel gaurd?
and did he do any work to the interior of the hull at that time?
....................................................................................................
he didn't do any work not for a bid of $1000 for 20 some inches of keel repair
...................................................................................................

now.....the fiber glass "holes" or where the matt lifted..........this is called de-lamination......and in fiberglassing.....de-lam is a failure.....is the matt that they added a chopped strand kind or a heavy woven looking thingy?
...................................................................................................
x
lift'd is the wrong word,, lets see if i can clearify,, you lay out a heavy matt
and the surface is not straight a section of it will lift causeing a fold ( a carpet not lay'd out flat ) the lift'd part was like an inch some times 1/2 inch at the outter edge, the entire matt was completely coat'd with resin and very strong,, grinding out the lift or hump would in my eyes weaken the floor, so i simply fill'd the void with resin ,,this keel section of the floor is no where near flat it's a steep angle
.....................................................................................................

ok....now......when you cleaned and fiilled the "air bubbles" with resin or seacast.....did you grind away the area first?.....(prep the surface)
................................................................................................
x
no grinding , no air bubbles ,,this keel stringer was completely wrap'd in a heavy matt and glass'd befor it was lay'd into the keel when the boat was built , then a matt was use'd to make the stringer part of the hull , it was this matt that had the wrinkles in the outter edge
.....................................................................................................

grinding can sometimes cause air bubbles in the origonal substraight to "expose them selves".....this is good because you can now see thiem to repait them.........i cant figgure out if the water is from a bad layup from the boat yard, and that the boat guy missed it because he didnt do the repair from both sides as this type of hull repair uasually would, or if the tremendous amount of water coming in is from a totally different area.......

......................................................................................................
x
ok the boat guy,, only redid the section of the keel on the out side 20some inches long,, all he did was grind the outter jell coat and crush'd fiber matt down till it was solid , the crush marks were length wise with the keel , when we start'd to grind the glass it was evident the matt layers had an air gap between them from the factory , if it had been solid none of this would have happen'd , also if more rollers would have been use'd up frt the weight would not have been so heavy on one spot , a single roller suport'd more then 1/2 the entire boat weight on the trailer
.................................................................................................

seriously....the amount of water your talking about is not a leak......its a freeking river! and it should be apperant unless its covered up by somthing......(like a keel gaurd).

i think we need pics......you might have to rip out the keel gaurd.

but.....when posting pics.....after you up load to photo bucket....resize to 640 x 480 then copy the img tag..........and just past it in your responce.......other ways you get those thumbnails and they arent really big enough to see areas we need to see

......................................................................................................
x
i op'd out on the keel guard as they all say it can't be use'd on a roller set up , besides there was no use installing one untill i had this leak thing fix'd ,
i'l keep trying on the photo bucket thing , never had any problem linking pics befor but normaly i use one of my own photo gallerys one i use for my car site Starquest I-x net and the other for the other car sites i'm on, both are unlimit'd in size and always there :)
clicking on the thumb nails gives you a full size'd pic , but i'l take some more pics as soon as it stops raining

Re: got a leak and can't find it , help

oops what i was earlier refering to as matt i found while doing some reading on here is call'd woven roving , this was use'd on the inside for the stringers and the lay ups on each side of the stringer, and it was this that had the lifts or folds in the material ,,any chop gun usage was very light to say the least
that could also explain why the stringers were not tie'd togather properly in the corners

sorry if my word useage is confuseing , i'm still learning

the dirty dark spots is oil stains from the water we were in , last week we fish'd was the florida power plant discharge out let and they were dumping some clean out that had an oil flim to it

i did notice some black rub marks from what apears to be a roller that is not spining , but slideing,, thats strange as all rollers spin very easily by hand with boat off trailer

now back to the repair area on the keel he said he'd come back to finesh it out with color in the cell coat,,but i haven't heard from him nor does he answer phn calls ??

shelby....love the photobucket pics.....but can you get us a close up shot of the area where you suspect the leak is? including movung the boat back....so the roller is out of the way before the gell coat goes on........it isnt fixed if there is still water comin in.....so there is no use him putting the gellcoat back on

Re: got a leak and can't find it , help

oops i got plans for doing just that but have to wait on the weather to change,, it's too dangerous for me to mess with geting a cold, i only have 20% of heart funtion so that makes me tire very quickly , and asma on top of that , along with still feeling the effects of breathing fg dust the last time i was messing with sanding glass
i know live and learn :(

i've decide'd to take up the floor befor going back to the water , cause one way or another i'd going to have to do that to find out where the water is entering the hull or at the very least what end frt, back or middle

i'd love nothing more then jump out there tear it apart and keep working but thats out of the question right now , i just hope your arround whne i get to tearing it all out and testing it for leaks i'm sure i'l need your advice
on how to go about takeing care of the problem :)
