..... and now I am seeing some milkiness in the engine. I had the valve cover off for one evening and it was only one medium rain shower so there shouldn't be too much water in that oil.
Will it evaporate quickly or do I need to do an oil change?
Thanks,
Skiph

Once its at running temp residual moisture will boil off. If the dipstick is milky change the oil and filter.

HEY Blk ..... that is kinda contradictory.
It is kinda milky now.... are you saying run it for a bit and see if it goes away or ... don't wait to see if it boils off, just change it?

Skip: What is the reason you let the value cover remove? If there is no mechanical prob or the exhaust manifold is letting water into the engine. If this is just an accident you let the cover open then:
Do not run engine at all, not even 2 minute, if you do, depend amount of water contamination you might end up spending thousands dollars to rebuild the engine. open the drain plug let all the oil and water out, best over night, Change oil filter, refill fresh oil recomd by your engine, 90% recom SAE 30 in cold weather in hot area SAE 40 not multi visc. Depend engine 4-6 Quart, check the dip stick, Start engine with water hook up or in the lake, idle do not put it on drive until operate temp for 30 minute, depend on what engine 160-190 F Avg. shut it down, wait unit it cool down, check the oil level if it need to add oil and restart engine several time to operating T 30 min. Now change the oil and filter again and check any water in the oil, most small amount oil should boil away when the engine is in the operating T, the next several trips out keep check if oil is milky or if the Valve cover has thick coffee milk in it, if it does keep changing the oil, oil filter and clean out any contaminated oil.

$ 20.00 oil and filter is a lot cheaper than spending thousand to rebuild
Good Luck

Re: Got a little rain in my IL6 engine

Thanks, but I now have no choice but to run it. We've got two hurricanes headed right at us and I have to drive the boat over to the ramp - about 300 yards - so I can take it out and secure it.
There probably was no more than a cup or two of water that got into this brand new 20W-50W oil and I just will have to hope it isn't contaminated too bad. The color is more chocalate milk than white-ish. I've run the engine a couple of times and the temp stays at 140 and oil pressure is right at 40psi.
So I'll hope it survives.
Anyone got experience in tying down the boat, on the trailer, so it doesn't get blown around????? We're expecting gusts up to 75mph.
skiph

Use wratcheting straps on the back of the boat to the trailer. Tie the trailer down to a fixed/sturdy object (it does no good to secure the boat to the trailer well only to have the trailer blow away!).

If it's just accidental water intrusion, running the engine will do no harm and will actually boil out a lot of water. Change the oil, run it, change it again, it should be fine.
