Got a new motor w/ Pics**

Well I picked up a used boat and motor today. The motor is 1968 55 HP Johnson Hydro-Electric Shift. I am excited about it. I pull cranked it the other day with compression readings of 119,117,111. As you can see in the pics I have a lot of electrical work ahead of me. I do have a specific question however, this is my first 3 cylinder, and only my second outboard so forgive my lack of proper terminology. Should the fin (trim tab?) in the picture have that gap in it. The part I am speaking of is in the second picture, with the spider whom I may have to relocate to the bottom of my shoe. Also, were is the best place for these parts, would NAPA carry them? I would like to get the wiring harness used if anyone has one, or knows were I can find one. Don't want to pay 105.00 for that wire.

gap should not be there, should just tighten up with center bolt.

It actually loos like the piece is bent. Is there anything I should be cautious of while tightening the bolt? Is there a specific torque? I suppose that should be told in my manual. By the way, what is it called? Thanks Tashasdaddy

Thanks Gary, that will help alot. I was searching mindlessly through my manual for each part number.

The wiring on those year engines' really went to pieces with age. You may still be able to get a complete harness from Rapair. You will find that trying to repair the harness with solder, or crimp on connector's just won't work.

No plans to repair the harness. Just gonna find a used one hopefully, worse case I suppose a new one. Does anyone know how to test the amplifier pack to see if it still is good? Thanks

That harness went to pieces with age, not use, so what are the chances with a used one. I don't know how you would get an accurate test of anything with that harness.

Honestly, it looks like something was fried, not necessarily age, but certainly looks like age had a part in it. I didn't know if there was a resistance check or anything I could do on the amplifier pack itself.

It's called a trim tab. Unfortunately, it's made of aluminum and from the picture it looks like the beginings of a crack going through the mounting bolt. More torque won't help, replace it they aren't super expensive. You will have to go to your j/e dealer for it.

That battery ign. amplifier can be bench tested with a battery, and a coil, but hard to explain. You can do this. Disconnect the wire from points to amp, unscrew coil wire from dist. cap. With key on, coil should fire when point lead is touched to ground. Hold coil lead about 1/4" from ground when doing this.

Thanks R. Johnson. I will give that a try and post my findings.
