Re: got a new (to me) boat and lake powell this june

this will be my second trip to powell. first time was in 2007, a buddy of mine wanted to put the trip together then and i was definately on board with this one. it took a little convincing to talk the wifey into it because it's not cheap to rent a houseboat for a week there. she has been to mojave several times and hadn't heard of powell too much. people i have talked to have one thing to say about powell. "you have to go at least once before you die." well, i talked her into it and we went. it was by far the best time we have ever had. now she wont shut up about it. we have lake powell calendars hanging in the house. she has a secret bank account to house the lake powell fund. and she mentions going at least once a week. to keep the peace, i think we will retire there. my boss, who has been to every corner of the globe says, "lake powell has to be the most beautiful place on the planet." and i must agree. it is breath taking! this time the kids get to go. the youngest is 16 so there isn't much babysitting to do anymore. and this last part is politically incorrect, i know, but here goes. I didn't hear a language other than english, i didn't see grafitti on anything, and i didn't see any trash anywhere, except for one small empty water bottle floating in the lake and i happily stopped and picked it up. it couldn't be more awesome. I guess the high price helps keep it clean, and for that i don't mind paying it. lake powell will be a part of my life until i depart this world. it is that good!

The water is not as low as you think. Mead is still really low, but Powell was about 66% capacity at its annual high point last summer, and it will likely be higher this summer after the 2010 snowpac melts. Powell usually hits its annual low point just before snow melt occurs in March, and the annual high point is around July after the snow melt concludes. Right now Powell is 57% of capacity. For perspective, there is a navigation channel near Wahweap called the Castle Rock Cut. For several years this channel has been completely closed due to low water. There was finally enough water in the summer of 2008 to open the channel, but then it closed again the following winter. It opened again in 2009, and it is my understanding that it has remained open the entire 09/10 winter. With this perspective in mind you can see that water levels are significantly up compared to past years.

Part of the reason the Cut remained open could have been due to an excavation project completed by the NPS to lower the water level required to keep the Cut open.

Well, I just mapped it out. 1010 miles about 16 hours. straight out I-40 from Oklahoma. hmmmm. Maybe we should drag ours out there and give it a go on alleged paradise on earth. Pics look convincing.

do it! but i have to say the houseboat made the trip better. I have never gone with just a boat. it is nice to know, when you are 30-40 miles up river, you don't have to leave in time to get to the ramp before dark. you can beach camp as long as you have a porta-potty. my friends that have been there say, "you have to see it once in your life", once you do, once isn't enough!
