Got a New Tohatsu 20

Alright yall, got a 20hp 4-stroke recently. Right now I'm breaking it in and have followed the instruction manual very closely. It says that around 4 hours you are allowed a full throttle run for 1 min out of 10. Well I have just over 6 hours on the motor and it seems to not run too smoothly at full throttle, but AMAZING everywhere else. It sounds like I may be topping out the RPMs as it's pushing a very light boat. According to the prop calcualtor I should be going 27mph at max RPMs and 0% slip. Well, I was going 27 according to GPS, so is this just over-rev protection? I don't need to run it that fast, just curious. I'm not going to full-throttle it again until I'm completely done breaking it in and have had it re-serviced. I've been going at cruising speed mostly, half throttle.

Thanks. TELL ME if im doing anything wrong, I want this motor to last a long time!!

BTW, this motor has a mean hole-shot! I need to measure the acceleration cause it's crazy!

Re: Got a New Tohatsu 20

I just read some sticky posts on the FAQ, sorry about that. Guess I was over-revving...will never do That again, besides, running half throttle at 20-22mph is a lot quieter/seems more fuel efficient.

Still, do these have a rev. protection?

Yes, it does. Go up one pitch size on the propeller to keep the rev limiter from kicking in and your boat will go faster.

I was thinking about that...and couldn't find anything over 10" prop... what came standard.

The 9.8 pitch is the highest offered...Today. Give me until tomorrow afternoon to find out what else, on the market, will fit. In the end you could always take the prop to a prop shop and have them change the pitch.

Re: Got a New Tohatsu 20

StuBone - I have had the 18hp version for about 7 years, and have not
had it serviced by anybody but myself. That includes lube changes and
spark plugs, as I've not had any problems. Use good gas and fuel
stabilizer. I get about 20mph with my 18' jon boat, so I would like to know
what king of boat you have that you are getting 27mph with. Thanks.

Guru: That's an SS prop I'm hoping???

My boat is a 1432, all welded, 550 pounds running weight (me, motor, gas, basic stuff) :) I've got the max outboard for the transom rating.

Also, with three small guys (140lb.) it still cruises (half throttle) at 18-19 mph.

Check iboats.com props - they have an 11 pitch for $50.99.
It ain't SS, but at that price, you can't go wrong.
