Just got an eight week old Golden Retriever. I know the breed quite well since this is our sixth one and most of them love the water. Although on of my previous five had no interest whatsoever in swimming.

Well come summer I will want to take Otis out on the boat with us and was hoping to get some suggestions on what I need to have and what's the best way to get him back on board? We will be at Alum Creek mostly which is just a rather small calm lake, but can get pretty crowded.

Re: Got A Puppy

Congratulations!! I've had goldens my whole life. We're on our second as a family.

I actually had to teach all of ours to swim - in that I had to encourage them out in the water as pups. However, for ALL of them - once they got the idea they owned the lake! In fact, 15 minutes with the current dog and she was doing belly flops off the dock. 6 years later that is still her favorite way of getting in the water.

It's a great breed of dog. Enjoy the "follies" for the first six months.

I have a golden mix...don't know if it is a mix of Chow or Husky but he is the best dog and very smart. He kind of looks like a bear.

Re: Got A Puppy

Try the "Load A Pup". It works well for bowriders. I found that most of the products were to large and bulky to fit on a bowrider. The "Load A Pup" is small and folds up. It attaches to any boat ladder. Both of my dogs were able to use it after just a few minutes of helping them get in and out. Also get a good lifejacket with the handle on the back, to help them getting in and out of the boat. Have fun with the new pup!
