got broken screw out, now a small problem

ha, one problem always leads to another.

I pulled the flywheel again and got to the plate and removed it so I could get the broken eccentric screw out from the bottom of the armature plate. It was easy, it was sticking out so I just grabbed it with pliers and basically unscrewed it. No drilling or anything required.

BUT, now it introduced another problem to me when assembling the motor back together.

I think it has to do with 1 of 2 things. Either I am hooking the throttle linkage wrong (which i thought there was only 1 way to do this), or their is a small plastic arm by the carbuerator that swivels that might be causting the problem. I think this is the cam follower. It is white plastic and on a screw that allows it to rotate freely. Does this need to be up against the throttle cam when putting the motor back together, or swiveled back the other way. I didnt have it up against the throttle cam and I think that is where it is supposed to be.

When I hook it all back up, the throttle linkage is pushed so far over that it is on top of the shifting area and therefore the motor cant be shifted. If you try to shift the motor anywhere, its just stuck. Its hard to explain, but there is basically only 1 way to hook all the linkage back up and I did it that way but now it leaves no room for the shift linkage to work properly. And actually I was thinking that maybe the plastic gear that fits into the housing by the base of the tiller arm is sticking out too far and I need to make sure that is all the way in its housing...that might be shifting the linkage too far over and pushing it into the shifting linkage. I ran out of time last night, so I couldnt check everything.

I dont know if any of you can even answer the questions to my problem, but if you have any input, please let me know. In the meantime, I will be trying to assemble it back again correctly.

thanks

I'm sure you will figure it out but why not get a factory service manual from www.kencook.com

They have them all, it helped me get mine right.

the armature plate can be screwed on more than one way. only one way is correct however. a manual is what you need if you can't remember how it came off.

I have the manual...they dont explain in great detail the small things that have to be done. Its just a little hitch somewhere.

it is the factory manual too. The only questions I will usually post on here is something I cant comprehend from the manual or cant figure out.

thanks for the response

there are four screws on the magneto plate that hold it on. The plate they screw into will rotate 360 degrees without the magneto plate holding it. The cam on the magneto plate goes to the front (carb) side. If you put the magneto plate in the right spot then move the plate it attaches to match the screws then hook up the linkage it should work fine

The white cam follower rides on the armature plate cam. Then the cam follower operates the lever that opens the carburetor. Have the armature plate rotated toward slow (clockwise), make sure the follower is in a position to be pushed by the cam and go ahead and lower the armature plate into position.

But it sounds like you are having trouble with the link and arm that moves the armature plate and shifter interlock. If you rotated the twist grip control too far toward "fast" while it was disconnected, you may have gotten the rack and pinion gears out of proper alignment. The rack is the part that you referred to as sticking out too far.
EDIT: The rack moves in and out as you rotate the twist grip control. Perhaps you merely have to rotate it toward "slow"???

EDIT EDIT: The light just came on. The idle speed knob!!! It is the round knob outside where the tiller handle pivots up. It probably is screwed way too far in. That keeps the rack from retracting far enough to allow shifting. Back off on the knob and all will be well. Sometimes the answer is so obvious that we can't see it.

0310001 - Cam Follower

this is the part I dont know the function of on the motor. Its on the intake manifold page on the parts break down.

Its just a white piece of plastic that works as a swiveling arm. On the end there is a cylinder arm that is probably supposed to catch something.

if you guys could let me know what this thing is supposed to do, id appreciate it.

so the white came follower sits right up against the throttle cam and on the other side of it is the spring loaded throttle cam?

So the white piece is the piece that actually touches the cam?

thanks

yes. The reason is because the directions of movement are at an angle to each other.
