Got my Marine Technician Apprenticeship!

well it's official I've been excepted for a marine mechanics apprenticeship and am very happy these past few weeks, just starting to get everything in order! The place I was excepted at is a mercury dealership so I expect to be getting good training on all mercruisers, opti, verado, plus the owners are very nice so overall I think it will turn out good ! Now I just got to move my tool box :faint2:.......well at least I got my snap-on guy agreeing to help me get it to the new shop!

In response to ken: currently I am 17 and I am lead tech/foreman at motorcycle mechanics shop while in high school for the past 2 years. Its been a great experience but its time to get my career going now that high school is over!

aha thanks! Yeah I really pushed hard to get this job, I knew It was going to be hard as they are really the only good marine shop around and pretty much the only mercury dealer around here! but I was always trying to be nice and get to know the owners and their family and I was always stopping in at the shop, so it was great to hear them say that they would take me on for sure!

I will definitely be listening and learning everything I can guys, plus I already know quite a bit so that helps a ton when your first staring out! and will be on the forums more helping out once I get all the know how!

Believe it or not but I added it up and at only 17 I'm creeping close to 10k in tools! my current boss can't believe it lol neither can I! But those snap-on tools are not cheap:lol:

Congratulations Nathan, thats quite an accomplishment. Only problem I see, as a Merc. tech, it's liable to be a slow summer for you. Its not like they break down often !!! :laugh:

Thank you it means a lot! everybody I know thats my age is working at McDonalds flipping burgers and has no idea what they are going to do, not me aha I've been working my butt off getting everything figured out and look at me now I will be set and good to go. plus my goal was to do as little college as possible and it looks like I got my wishes (as I am not a book learner I am a hands on kind of person) so now every year for 3 years I will goto college during the winter months for 8 weeks to learn and the rest is on the job!

Factory training is what they look for along with proven ability. How long is the apprenticeship program? The sweet thing about factory training is it is free and it will help you years from now if you stay in the business and ever want to change locations.As far as tools go I would not keep thousands of dollars worth of tools in my shop box if I dont really need them . I would also find out if your tools are insured for replacement in case of a robbery.
