Got my son a wakeboard package...

For X-mas I got my 15 year old son a wakeboard package (board, boots, rope), from Overton's. It seems like a good set up for a starter. My question basically is: is this a trial & error kind of deal, learning how to wakeboard? He's pretty good at snowboarding & I figure it's more or less the same theory. Could be totally off here, I don't know. Beside watching the clips on Youtube, is there something else that will help him out? Let me know, don't want to crush the boy.:D

It's pretty easy to start out. The only trick is to keep you butt on your heels. You could ride for an hour in that position but if you stand up too early the board sinks and you faceplant. The boat will do all the work. When you are learning stay with your legs bent and your butt low longer than you think you need to.
Many videos are available to help him learn tricks and control. YouTube has hundreds for free. The very best instructional video is "The Book". It's a five disc set but just getting the first one is very useful.
Have him learn to slide the board and control his edging. You can do this inside the wake at 10-15 MPH and the falls don't hurt. Starting out he may want to set up the board directional, like a snow board. As he gets better he'll want his feet more neutral on the board with both toes angled out about the same.
Good luck to him, I think he'll enjoy it.

More like 18-20mph... anything slower than that really he'll just sink back down into the water and your boat probably won't even be on plane.

As far as getting up, rallyart pretty much covered it. Only extra I can add is having his arms wrapped around the outside of his knees, very similar to a cannon ball position. Just need to hold that and let the boat pull him on top of the water, standing up before hand will only result in catching his front side toe edge and face planting.

Its similar to snowboarding, but also very different. Snowboarding there is a fine line on how much pressure you roll onto the balls of your feet for your toe edge in order to have a nice turning transitions. On snow, you want just enough pressure to turn your toes white, while wakeboarding... your going to want an aggressive toe edge which takes a lot to over come if he has snowboarded a lot.

I wakeboarded for a while before I even tried snowboarding, it took me at least 3 different outings to finally figure out how much pressure to apply for my toe side transitions. Once he figures it out, he'll be hooked, nothing like the feeling of wake to wake jumps.

I got my son the Detention 2012 DVD 3 disk set by Shaun Murray. Covers from the basic to advanced. Google it and you will find it.
