Hi folks, I got my tilt/trim unit today and it has a blue, a black, and a red wire off the motor. I've already bought the momentary on/off,on switch and I guess I need a solenoid or two correct? Could someone tell me exactly what kind of solenoid I need and where I should mount it? Also what gauge wire do I need for the switch to the solenoid? I know it is pretty heavy wire coming off the motor but the switch wire doesn't have to be that heavy does it?
Thanks,
Rich

Re: Got my tilt/trim today..question...

Rich, here we go, when you finish the installation the three wires from the motor will effectively connect as follows, black to battery negative, red will connect to battery positive through one relay to turn the motor in one direction, blue will connect through the second relay to battery positive to turn the motor the opposite direction, only one color wire at a time can be connected, the relays will take care of this. You will need 2 SPST relays, that's Single Pole Single Throw relays with a 12 volt coil and 30 to 40 amp rated contacts. I got mine from the local car stereo/alarm shop, they use lots of these and they come with a plug in relay socket and wire harness. The relay terminals are apparently industry standard numbered, the terminal numbers you will use are 30, 85, 86, and 87. Number 85 and 86 are the relay coil connections, number 30 and 87 connect together inside the relay ONLY when you activate the relay by connecting terminals 85 and 86 to the battery. Connect the relays as follows, number 86 from both relays can connect together and then to the battery negative, number 30 from both relays can connect together and then to the battery positive terminal through a 15 to 20 amp fuse, number 87 from one relay connects to the red motor wire, number 87 from the other relay connects to the blue motor wire. Number 85 from one relay connects to the ON-OFF-ON switch on one end terminal, the number 85 from the other relay connects to the other end terminal of the switch, the center of the switch connects to battery positive through a 1 or 2 amp fuse. The wires from the switch to the relays and battery positive can be a small size like a number 16 or 18 since the current is less than 1/10 amp, the wires from the motor to the relays and from the relays to the fuse and battery should be as
large as the wires on the motor. I suggest you mount the relays inside the back of the boat assuming the battery is also there. Possible problem, one, when you finish and test the installation the boat motor may lift up when you want it to go down, if so then simply loosen the switch mounting nut and turn the switch a half turn and tighten the nut. I would also coat the relay terminals and relay socket with silicone grease to keep water out, that's about it, it sounds worst then it is really is, good luck. Any questions, just ask, good luck, Ken

Hi Ken, Thanks for the detailed and very informative reply. I didn't know they were numbered, that should make it that much easier with your instructions. Now I just need the rain to let up for a bit this weekend so I can get it done...that and put my new floor in...Thanks again, I will let you know how it goes..

Rich

Re: Got my tilt/trim today..question...

Rich, you're welcome, I used a similar wiring system for my 2-wire T&T. Is your ON-OFF-ON switch a spring return to center type? Mine wasn't so I added a push button switch to avoid leaving the T&T in either ON position. I know what you mean about the rain, it just won't stop here either. Boat sits on the trailer and I roam the web, bummer :D

Re: Got my tilt/trim today..question...

Hi, Yes I did get a spring loaded switch. I have another question though. There are two pistons inside of the brackets on my motor that were ruined by electrolysis. The previous owner said they were just an assist for raising and lowering the motor manually. Are they necessary for the power tilt also? also there is a small wire coming from the left piston and just dangling. Would that be the wire for a trim guage? If so I don't need it correct?
Thanks,
Rich

iRich,

The pistons you describe are hydraulic "assist" pistons. You can remove them if you like. They will not be needed with the trim and tilt.

The wire is probably a ground wire. A trim guage sender wouldn't be there as standard on an engine not built with it.

Re: Got my tilt/trim today..question...

rich the wire you were talking about is a sender wire for a trim gauge.now you can get either relays or solenoids.i got solenoids.the relay has to beable to handle atleast 40amps.the motor draws 40amps,so i used a solenoid it can handle 50amps.the red wire is for down and the blue wire is for up.i used #8 gauge wire and spliced it as close as i could get it to my pump.like i said it draws 40amps the wire that is on it is #12 and that is cutting it close for amp draw.i thought i explained all of this before but i could be wrong.i have the same system on my motor.so do what you want either use relays or solenoids.i think solenoids are cheaper.the ones i got are for a ford V-8,since the amps on a ford starter are close to the amps on the pump.but like i said its your choice.

Re: Got my tilt/trim today..question...

thanks for the help fellas...i have it installed and it seems to work fine. According to the manual it should take no more than 15 seconds to go from full trim to full tilt and it does. Two questions though...
One, from what I gather from the manual and watching the system work before installing it, (I tested it), am I correct to assume one piston is for trim, (the left side looking at it from the rear), and the other piston is for the tilt?

Two, If so there is a wire coming off the trim side which I would guess is for a trim guage, correct? djohns19 says it is probably a ground wire, but a ground for what?

Thanks for the help on this everyone!

Rich

Re: Got my tilt/trim today..question...

I got a problem with my tilt & trim, my motor only has two wires coming out of it. My t&t stop working and I went into the box were all the wires go into the relies and these wires where all rusted up and I deside to give it a good cleaning and add new connectors and did, but in the mean time I've lose the diagram of the wire and where they go in the box and out to the switch. I've found a diagram of the rely wire in the box lid. I think I've got every thing in place in the box, my problems going to the switch there's three wire coming off the switch red/wh,blue/wh,and green/wh. Now my problem is that there is 5 wires coming out of the box going to the switch same three color as above and Black/wh and white/yl where does these two wires go? That my problem! Another question is what size fuse do one use in the rely box on the hot jumper? Thanks and God bless all. This is a 140 Johnson 1984 model.
JLbass

i told you before the wire is for a trim gauge.and yes the cylinder on the left is for trim.sorry to sound mean but i answered your questions many times and it seams you are ignoring my responses

Re: Got my tilt/trim today..question...

Ok, I'm finally getting around to hooking up the solenoids and the momentary switch. The problem is I bought two solenoids from the auto parts store and they have no numbers on the terminals. Now I know the larger terminals are for the battery to the motor and the smaller are for the switch. I have a wire coming from the center terminal on the switch to the pos. on the bat. Then I have one wire from each of the other two terminals on the switch going to a small terminal on each solenoid. The other two small terminals I jumped together and hooked to the bat. ground. Blue and red wires from pump hooked to large terminal on each sol. and blak from pump to bat. ground. The other two large posts on the solenoids are jumped together and hooked to bat. pos. with a 20amp fuse. It doesn't work. I have tried switching the wires around on the two solenoids and still no go. The trim works as I can jump directly from the bat. and get it to go. Any ideas? Are these solenoids maybe not the kind I need? Thanks,

Rich
