Looking over the pictures, I hope picture number 5 is a lighting issue, because it looks like old buildup of oil residue or hopefully standing rebuild oil in the rocker arms. I see on some it really looks like old stains from old oil build up. Hope it is just the lighting or actual oil there...

Looks nice but no timing cover, that's different.

Edit: also no oil pan. Hope it came with a new oil pump

My SBC didn't come with a pan or timing cover either.....the oil pump is in the 3rd pic.

The way Rapido did this engine was that I ordered a short block and had them add the Vortec heart-shaped heads. They charged $200 for the heads but they included a good timing chain set and valvetrain stuff ( pushrods and rocker arms, Installed and adjusted ) I'll use the tin from the old motor. Heads and rockers are re-conditioned used stuff. I'm not worried about any dis-coloring on the rockers. They are definitley clean.

Check the head bolts to be sure they are sealed, wouldn't hurt to see what head gasket was installed. Automotive or marine.

No reason to... I read the post, that was more than enough.

First I said my thread, the one posted on this forum. 350 2 barrel to 350 MAG MPI conversion. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Mine was a fresh rebuild, head bolts not sealed, also automotive head gasket installed. I did not check when I first received mine, I trusted. Cost me a lot in the long run. Because I have a low post count does not mean I'm not trying to help the OP. So the OP can either do it or not.

I can only offer my experience. This was not meant as a joke.

Surely not taking sides here because I respect your opinions. I'm sure you have had great results with the company specified. But I have watched many Hot Rod type shows and most of them do remove heads and even cams and cranks to check things. It really isn't that unusual. Whether the OP wants to do that or not is his decision. But rebuilding a lot of engines myself, I'd have to check their work for my own peace of mind... May not find anything out of the norm, but for that one that is, it could be a life and time saver. I do know a local machine shop around here did a rebuild on a small block and they are a very well respected machine shop as well. Been in business for decades...literally! But my son decided to check the bearings on the crank and discovered they installed the wrong size... Easy fix at that time!

This is why I like to do my own rebuilds. No offence to any of the rebuilders, but stuff happens. I like being able to point the finger to the one who did it wrong, and I hate it when that happens

If I was going to double check everything done by a rebuilder I would just farm out the machining and assemble the whole thing myself.

My son found the bearing problem by simply doing a plastigage on the main bearing from a machine shop short block rebuild. And strangely enough the owner of the short block was telling my son, who was reassembling the motor for the friend, that he didn't want any checking and to just put it back together, he wanted to get it back running as fast as he could. So my son told him that he would check the short block for any clearance issues OR he could take the rebuild to somebody else to finish the project. And one of the main bearings was way out... Plastigage found it very quickly... Just posting how things can happen. Most likely the OP will have no problems though!

And that's fine if that is your choice, but understand its not the choice others make and many simply leave it to the pros. and trust they did a decent job. As long as its got a good warranty put the tins on and fire that bad boy off.

Agree, as before no offence and if I bought one from a rebuilder, I would just put it together and go, no checks.

Did buy a brand new crate motor, installed, and 10 hours later had a problem. But this is another story for another thread/day.

I do appreciate every ones input here. I won't be disassembling the engine to double check Rapido Marines rebuild job. This isn't rocket science here. Basic assembly done by a reputable shop on a simple engine is good enough for me. That's why I dealt with them and didn't buy a "mass produced" remanufactured engine from ATK or Marshall or Jasper. I had a conversation with the owner (Raul) and we discussed what I wanted and he built it for me. That kind of service, along with a good reputation, is what I wanted. I've seen a few problems from time to time with rebuilt engines from various rebuilders, but it's rare, and that's what a warranty is for. I'm pretty sure tearing down the engine will void my warranty. I'm willing to take the small risk that they screwed something up and install the motor without checking every clearance and such. Heck, that's why I didn't buy a used engine and lug it all to the machine shop and all that. Again, I really appreciate every ones input. Here's a pic of the boat it's going in. All Welded Aluminum ( deck too!) little 19' Fisher. Watch out Rockfish in the Chesapeake Bay!
