28 hp johnny as in my signature, Around june I rebuilt the carb with a new carb kit, it ran decent, but had a hard time fine tuning the thing(it wanted to stall around 5 mph, if ya ran slower or faster it would run great),I took it to a shop, the tech opened it up adjusted the screw and said you should be really close. Since then I have logged maybe 8 hrs on it, and its getting worse, just 2 days ago, I was WOT till I got to the boat ramp, idled down and just as I tied it off, it stalled, no spitting no sputtering, just died, so I put it on the trailer and had a heck of a time starting it,(in the water still) Bulb was firm just wouldnt fire, Finally I put my fast idle arm all the way up before she finally caught and stayed running( I have never had to start with the fast idle arm more then 1/4 of the way up, plus the motor was warm already I shouldnt have had to use it). well just this morning I went to go hunting and it wouldnt stay running, it idled so low it would stall before I could get it in gear, After about 10 minutes and a switch of gas tanks it wasnt much better, but I got it to take off, it vibrated and stuttered for about 5 seconds or so and got on plain,So something isnt right. And now I have something rattling under the cover,I hear it at idle or WOT doesnt matter. What could the rattle be? sounds almost like keys rattling but its in or on the motor somewhere, and I wonder if this also caused my very low idle, like my timing changed or something? Unfortunatly at 5 am I couldnt see anything on the motor vibrating,I did notice alot of moisture under the hood, in the bottom of the housing, plus some milky looking residue. I may take it ot the ramp again, and fire it up went the sun is up
Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to try and explain as best as I could.

heyttown,

First off, you should have no moisure under the hood. Check the hose that goes from the head to the telltale outlet in the bottom cowl. If that's OK, you may have a leaking side cover gasket, head gasket or engine to exhaust tower gasket.

I checked the hose for the telltail, and everything around that area, I checked the gaskets that I could see, and didnt see anything that looked bad. The other day I hunted for a couple hrs in a downpour rain, thats the reason why I think it has moisture in there, maybe my hood didnt have a good seal. its usually pretty dry. Anybody have any other ideas as to my problems, I am more concerned with the other things then the moisture, at this point anyways.

I dont have a compression checker, is that something you can rent from an autoparts store?

you can buy a compression gage fairly inexpensive--check auto store, sears tool dept, etc. I would spend the extra bucks for one that screws into plug hole. However, a hand held rubber tiped job is fine also, however you will most likely need a person to crank motor or hold gage.

Remember, check compression with throttle wide open, ALL plugs out of engine, beware of any stray spark igniting fuel or fuel vapors around engine--keep cranking till highest gage reading.
