Well guys, gas topped $4 a gallon here in Chicago today on the water. I got the boat running two weeks ago and I think they planned it just for this week end, to catch all us 4BBL V8 guys going out for what could be one of the last week ends of the boating season here. Last two week ends I used $100 but that was right around $3 to $3.20. Now I am wondering if it was a good idea to get the boat running again. I used to think the repairs were expensive but gas is unbelievable. I cant imagine what you dual engine guyys with a couple hundred gallons on board are doing!!!

With petrol (gas) at $8 a gallon in the UK you have it cheap over there in the US at $4, don't worry about it, if you love to boat you'll go anyway.
ross.

This is probably OT and I may get dinged by the mods (I really do love this site BTW), but I am sick and tired of hearing all the comparisons between the UK and US - we have it cheap? NOT. Our fuel prices have risen by over 40 percent since January of this year. Our people are used to paying 1.50 a gallon on the street and a little more at the marina.

Personally, I know of many people who have parked their twin engine boats (myself included - twin 340HP big blocks). Yes, there are going to be a lot of people who say...well, I only boat a couple of times a year, so screw it, it's only money. Problem is, I used to be able to fill my fishing boat for 60-70 bucks (21 ft. center console with a 135). Now it will cost me close to 200. That's a huge difference - 60 bucks was a trip once a week or every other week. At 200, it's a trip once a month at best. Simple supply and demand. THe good news is that all of us who have parked boats will ease the demand on fuel thereby dropping prices back down to a reasonable level.

Understand, this whole ... it's 8 dollars in the UK thing doesn't fly for us. Just this morning I heard a couple of economists talking about what the Fed was going to do - the spike in fuel prices can be interpreted as inflation - therefore the Fed should raise interest rates to cool the economy. However, that same spike will lower demand for fuel - thereby cooling the economy. Therefore the Fed will not need to raise rates - this is the worst possible scenario. I'm not saying inflation is good, but by artifically holding the interest rates down, you'll hold salaries down (because of the perceived lack of inflation), while at the same time, costs are skyrocketing out of control. In the UK, you've obviously got much higher taxes - and more government benefits than we in the US, and furthermore, salaraies in the UK are generally quite a bit higher than in the US which can help to offset the higher fuel prices.

Rant over.

Gas price is slowly and surely increase as days goes by. It was $2.79 the night before but this morning it was $2.99. (Just because some stupid IDIOT says that there is a shortage   ). I have friends that works in the oil refineries and they tells me that gas shortage is one way to fill the company's coffer. They have stock pile of gas in inventory but the company release them slowly to create an artificial shortage just to make MORE money and have big pay increase.  .
It dampens the local economy and curtails what I can do with limited resources... OK...I am done ranting..have to get this out of my system. Also my $0.02 worth.

You are way off, Salaries are not higher in the UK, most of the guys here earn about 30,000 British Pound = 54,999.0 US dollars and looking at software jobs on the net in the US they are all between 60-80K dollars.
It is also cheaper for us here to buy a boat in the US and pay to create it/ship it over the ocean (then pay tax on it), than to buy a boat here or boat parts here in the UK.
ross

ross,

I know in my previous firm (several thousand employees in the UK) our brothers across the pond generally were paid about 10-15K more than their counterparts in the US. And if most guys in the UK earn 55K USD, that's pretty good. Our median income here is what 36K USD?

Re: Got the boat running just in time to catch the latest increase

monsta, That is exactly the same here and I gas at dock, usually about $0.30 more than street plus I run premium. I am lucky, only 35 gallons on the boat. I know several guys with 100 to 200 gallons. I cant imagine forking up $800 just to fill the tank!! Jeez, I can buy a complete short block for that!!! I just couldnt run it. And to think, I complained about the cost of parts just a year or two ago.

And guys, I just wanted to rant and vent a bit but I didnt mean to cause an internationqal scene!!! US and UK are allays (however the heck you spell it)!! Bottom line, costs a BUNCH to operate the marine craft every where. I hope all you guys with shops still have customers running their boats!!!

Here's the gas prices in Toronto and the greater area. $1.34 per litre, thats about $5.36 CDN per US gallon or $6.03 CDN for a Imperial Gallon, which means my boat that holds 55 US gals is gonna cost 304.80 to fill from dead empty, this is for a Wellcraft 196 Eclipse which is considered to be a 19 or 20 ft boat, Still just a little guys boat.. That tank of fuel equals about 20% of my takehome pay. >>>WTF!!!
