Changed that fuel cell on a buddies boat 2 years ago and FWIW that is the same part number that I got for his 2009 5.0GXi-J, and for about the same price I paid. At the time, this was the 5th generation part number and was only listed in Europe. Hopefully, after 5 attempts, they finally have the problems fixed. Good luck. Make sure you always precharge your fuel filter before installing it to prevent the pump from running dry. My buddy has had no problem with the new pump in two years, and he cruises a lot.

ok, new pump is in. getting installed tomorrow morning. just a few questions

do i need teflon tape on the fuel lines?

will regular o-rings work on the high pressure lines or do i need something special?

this new one, the fuel filter is quite a bit longer and says it is a water seperator. I assume this is a good thing. can someone explain?

No, don't use Teflon tape. Use a thread sealing compound found in the autoparts store made for fuel lines. No worries on the fuel filter/water seperator. Just fill it full of fuel and spin it on. As far as the o rings on the fuel pump, I don't know what you are referring to. Maybe someone else has an answer.

Ditto what Monster said. Never use teflon tape on any fuel system connection. Permatex makes an excellent teflon based thread sealant and should be available at most auto parts stores.
The shop manual says this about the o-rings:
"Fuel Pipe O-Rings
O-rings seal the threaded connections in the fuel
system. Fuel system O-ring seals are made of special
material. Service the O-ring seals with the correct
service part." I would attach the page, but I don't know how to do that.
Since orings can be made from Viton, Urethane, Silicone, Nitrile, and dozens of other compounds, I would suggest that you use the Volvo spec o-rings. They're fairly cheap and a fuel leak could "...ruin yer whooooole day"
The longer filter is an improvement by Volvo in their continuing effort to deal with the fact that more marinas are selling ethanol blended fuels which attract and hold water. It has more water separating capacity. If you can avoid ethonal fuel, do it.

Re: Got the dreaded Volvo fuel pump whine. help!

It is not hard to do. Just remove the pump from the bracket and put it on a bench. Use a torx screw driver to remove the fuel cell body from the top and bottom of the unit. Clean the water jackets in the hollow body. Use a brush to get any dissolved paint build up from the filter housing. Clean the fuel screens off on the two fuel pumps. Its really easy to see what to do once you have it apart. Also make sure you don't have any corrosion on the connectors to the fuel pump motors. Make sure it is all clean and put it together. Hopefully it should solve your problem.

O.K, I have a corrosion issue on the high pressure side electrical connection. The one connector is part of the high pressure module which has the 'pins' in it (as in male side). The wiring harness had the 'female' connector (which the pins go into). Where can I get that connector (wiring harness side)? The best I can find is a small wiring harness from Volvo (and cut off the plug I need), but of course they are proud of it. (21242089) $60+ on the internet. And all I need is one plug. Someone did say a Merc 'fuel injector harness repair kit' $20 (879346A50) would work, but haven't had anyone comment on that either.

Any help is appreciated.

What web site is best for low price and selection to buy Volvo parts? I currently need a high pressure pump due to "whine" and need to save all I can. Also, there are numerous part numbers for "apparently" the same pump. My old one is 342-0167a. What do I need??

what engine do you have? I found ebay to be the cheapest. I think there is a link up there to the exact one i bought, but its for the 5.0GXI engine.

I think you need to check the pressure on the low side first. Then do the fuel rail. This will tell you what you should need. Usually the failure of the high pressure is because the low side is failing.
Try opening your own thread instead of hijacking someone else. You will get a better response.

I OWN A 2006 FOURWINNS 328 VISTA. HULL #GFNCV016B606. ENGINE 5.7 OSI -E. OUTDRIVE XDP-D. I HAVE COMPLETED THE MARINE PROPULSION TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN 2003. I HAVE 45 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WITH ICE’S AND A STRONG BACKGROUND IN MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT.
I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH MY 2006 VOLVO EQUIPMENT FROM THE DAY OF PURCHASE; SO YES I HAVE A FIX FOR THIS “CARTER” INJECTION PUMP ASSEMBLY. VOLVO PART #359444. SO MANY BOATERS, THAT WERE UNFORTUNATE TO BUY THIS POORLY ENGINEERED “RUBE GOLDBERG” DISASTER, HAVE SPENT MANY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS UNNECESSARILY.
I HAVE PUT TOGETHER A PICTORIAL AND WILL GIVE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION VERY SOON.
THERE IS A SOLUTION AND I BELIEVE VOLVO PENTA OWES ALL OWNERS A RECALL, FOR ALL OF OUR EXPENSE, OR AT THE VERY LEAST A HUGE APOLOGY.

Sounds great! Please let us know where you plan to post the information. I have saved a removed pump assy and planned to do a teardown failure analysis myself this winter, maybe restore the unit if it makes sense. 5 attempts by Volvo/Carter to get this right is just horrible engineering.
