The local advance didn't have the formula 88. I stopped and picked up a bottle of the Whink stuff. It took the rusty color off the engine but did not do much at all for the hull...

Got the boat moved around back and getting ready to see how stubborn those bolts on the lower are gonna be. I took a wire wheel brush to the upper. Its going to be fine just some pitting in the case but not bad at all...

I wonder if there is some kind of coating on your hull, oil or other, that's causing it not to work. Try cleaning a spot with SoftScrub, and then the Whink. I'll be really surprised if it doesn't work. It works like an eraser on my hull (but then again my stains aren't there for very long before I remove them). Hmmm...sorry if I steered you wrong...

Does the Whink have hydrocloric or oxicilic acid in it. Your going to need something with a high percent per volume of oxicilic acid, or oxcilic acid in a pure form. If the oxcilic acid won't remove it your going to have to soda blast or sand it off. On-Off Hull cleaner has oxcilic acid in it's contents, but, Star Brite's Rust Stain Remover has a higher percentage of oxcilic acid by volume. I don't know where to buy pure oxcilic acid, may try some of your local specialty paint stores.

No problem,I bought a small bottle just to test it out.It did remove the rust stains on the white paint on the engine so it was worth the 6 bucks..:D

RP,it has the hydrochloric acid. I'll call around and see if i can find the other stuff..
Thanks..

you might try muratic acid, the pool stuff straight. we used it to clean brick, and driveways, and really nasty toilets. get a clothes pin for your nose. you need a respirator and goggles.

The wood deck renewal products sold at the depot all contain a pretty high percentage of oxalic acid.

Thanks Studly and RP.
Worst case if i can't get it off would one of the marine dealers at the coast be able to do anything or would it need repainted?
Or would i be better off just putting antifouling paint over it?

Gary, give the comet and scotch pad a try, I have used it many times particularly at the waterline.. just be prepared to buff afterwards.. TD, the paint on that old buick is a little different than gelcoat. I'll bet you Ma was hot...LOL

I would exhaust all the chemical cleaners befor I decided to paint it. I wouldn't paint over it without some serious preping/sanding. Then paint with Emron or a trailerable botom paint. Soda blasting is an option also. You would have to call around to some of your local boat yards to get someones name.

Re: Got the new (to me) boat home

Ok,i tried the Comet on a small area, that was a no go. Went and looked at deck cleaner, didn't have the oxicilic acid in that.Found some stuff at walmart called TheWorks,it has oxicilic in it. It does clean it some with a scrub pad.I got the transom spotless but the hull is so much worse.
I need something with a higher concentrate of oxicilic.
Been reading about the MaryKate on-off hull cleaner,it has the same acid in it..
I did get all of the old stripe decals off the sides with the pressure washer..:D

And my new lower unit gets shipped out today!!

Re: Got the new (to me) boat home

you might try some CLR ,its a calcium, lime, and rust remover. seems to work pretty well on big water stains, since most are actually a buildup of calcium from the water. Its available in lots of home improvement stores and its usually pretty inexpensive, not sure about availability on the net....if you cant find any, give me a shout, i probably got half a bottle laying around someplace, id be happy to send it your way so you could try it out.

Gary, sorry the comet didn't work for you. I guess the discoloration must be a lot deeper than usual.. I have never tried it but have heard that oven cleaner works on some types of stains.. the only other thing i can think of that will probably work is to get some 600 grit sanding discs and a D.A. sander.. if you do this BE-CAREFUL! as you can sand thru the gelcoat.

toilet bowl cleaners usually have some acid in them and will cling to the hull as they slide down. use caution, clean trailer, hands, etc...a scrubber on a long stick will really help.

good luck

Ooooh... That blows! I had to go out of town weekend before last when I had just received my new fuel tank. Hate being out of town when there are pressing boat projects!!!:(
