I have the trailer blasted down to bare metal. I am planning on priming with this http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/kspepoprime.aspx

Looking for some recommendations on a top coat paint. I have the ability to spray on and would rather do that for finish appearance. Looking for something rust resistant and durable. I dont want to be repainting in 2 years. Black will be the finished color. What have you used in the past and what was your experience with it. I have researched online and get all kinds of recommendations from Rustoleum to Pro15 to tractor implement paint...
thanks for any input!

I just painted my Boat and trailer with Rustoleum with the added hardener. Both turned out great and the paint is as hard as nails. Check out page#10 in my "My Flamingo" thread listed below, for pics and all the details on how to apply. I used the Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer on my trailer. Bought a quart of it at WalMart for 9 bucks. Did the whole trailer. 1 1/2 quarts of paint for two coats of the final finish.

I'd do the same as Wood suggested except with it all cleaned up, I'd probably use their Clean Metal Primer as opposed to the Rusty Metal one.

Re: got the trailer blasted, ready to prime, need some paint recommendations now.

In the past 3 years I have done 2 different trailers with a product made by Rustolium called Industrial Choice DTM. It's an acrylic based paint which is sprayable and cleans up very easily. Went on very nicely, holds up very well and looked excellant when finished. Even on mine that hadn't been blasted and just sanded with a angle grinder and a flap wheel.

The biggest drawback is availability. Sorry I can't suggest a retailer as I got mine through my wifes work which is an Industrial Supply Co. She brought it home in a damaged gallon can for next to nothing as it costs them more to ship it back to Rustolium than it's worth! Honestly I am very impressed with this product and will use it again for outdoors work. The only other drawback I've found is setup time. Drys to the touch quickly and can be worked with but it really took a long time for it to fully cure to a very hard finish.

Just thought I'd put it out there for an option!

I hate to say it but I use a lot of IPC dist by PAI. Industrial Protective Coating comes in a large rattle can, less than two cans to paint a small boat trailer. It's pricy but covers a large area and gives a smooth shine.

The Rusto is fine as well as most any good grade of automotive enamel. Surface, as stated, is the most important for any finish coat. Use whatever primer the manufactuer recommends for bare metal

(yes I used the word "automotive" on the forum)

How much is it costing to have your trailers blasted. It is one of my future projects and I am curious what I am in for.

I got a price of $75 bucks here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. But I decided to Sand and Paint myself.

A lot of people use the Rustoleum but I cann't seem to find it localy. I go to Tractor Supply Co. and get their implement paint. Its made by Valspar and comes with the hardener. Like the Rustoleum it dries hard as nails but Tractor Supply seems to be everywhere and they all stock the paint. It also comes it a large variety of colors.

Rustoleum is sold at all Lowe's and Home Depot's. At least in Oklahoma it is.

I did mine myself. Was about $90 for the blaster/air compressor. About $36 for the media at TSC. To be honest probably would be worth it to bring it in and have someone do it for you if under $150. Fun experience ONCE but the fun wears out pretty quick.

I stripped mine with a needle scaler and then painted it with a roller and implement paint from Tractor Supply. Everyone that sees it thinks I sprayed it. I did use the hardener for the paint. Cost me about $50 including the foam rollers.

When I did my trailer I just used regular rattle can Rustoleum. I wouldn't recommend that at this point. The stuff chips off if you even look at it too hard. The hardener in the bulk cans makes all the difference.
