gov. grants??

Hi<br />Anyone know about these free government grants I keep hearing about on TV and such? Im pondering starting a dive charter in Cheboygan Michigan. I know of people in mackinaw city, st ignace, rogers city, alpena, and all around me that are doing OK with it, but none here in Cheboygan. I cant help but wonder if any of these grants really aren't simply a myth, Sure would help me get the boat to meet good ol uscg standards <br />Thanks again<br />Craig

the govt only grants money to multi billion dollar oil companys that give senators millions in cash.

Grants? You want the taxpayers to give you money to start your business? I don't think so. That's not what we pay taxes for. You have to fund your business yourself.

However, there are Small Business Administration loans available for small businesses. Go to www.sba.gov to find out about them. Or visit your local bank and discuss a business loan with them. They'll want to see a business plan (search Google for "business plan") and some evidence of your good credit history.

But I sure don't want the government giving away my tax dollars, which I paid out of the income of my own small business, away to some other business. Think about it.

Definately not a myth.. but near impossible to get anything, and if you "try" to get one, plan on spending several years and filling out a ton of paperwork, and going through a ton of Red Tape... Especially in Michigan (I'm a Michigan small business owner).. Help get rid of Granholm and maybe things will pick up!

Work with the office of your local congress person. This is one of the many things we pay these people for, yet no one seems to use them. Although I disagree that my tax money should be used for this purpose, there are people doing it anyway so why not you.

that is called government b.s. they should be giving grants for other things like the economy or better war techno to maybe stop the war in Iraq.They should be worrying about other things.

Old thread, but I missed it, so I'll throw my 2 cents in now. If the government realizes that the bulk of the economy is made up of small businesses, which they tax, so if they want to stimulate small business growth (thus tax base growth) with small business grants, I don't see the problem... as long as the ROI is greater than 1 for these grants.

PS - yes, they are real, and yes, you will most likely need to hire a lawyer to file all the paperwork correctly, etc. to get one, which is only IF one is available for your type of business you want to start. However, there are plenty of other sources of startup capital. Check out the resources at your local chamber of commerce and SBA for starters, and they can point you to other areas applicable to your situation.
