I have been trying to research a finder/gps for awhile now. I have been looking favorably at the garmin 540s which is priced at $699 right now. At the $700 price range, would this be the unit of choice? I wouldnt mind dropping in price, but I dont want to go up. I am open to suggestions as I am new to boating. Thanks!

Re: GPS and sounder combo

We've been looking at replacing our Standard Horizon with a Garmin duel function for awhile now. I'd also like to hear some recommendations.

I personally prefer seperate units, that way if something goes wrong you don't lose both functions.

I don't like the dual units for the reason thurps said. Also if one of the functions goes out permanently you have to replace both or waste space with a unit that is only performing 1/2 it's functions.

Re: GPS and sounder combo

I bought a refurb 540S this spring. So far so good, works well, as advertised. Also bought the G2 chip. The basemaps are pretty much useless in this part of the world but may be better on the US coastlines. Have also added the GFS 10 fuel flow sensor (well waiting for network kit). Not really sure I want to know exactly how much fuel I'm burning but.......

I think the 540S with the extended warranty, G2 chip, external antenna, GFS 10/network I've got <$1000 in the whole rig. Certainly a lot nicer than hauling the laptop along on every trip. The Garmin CANet & NMEA 2000 network allows you a lot of cross functionality with other compatible electronics. For fishing or on a larger cruiser you can add a slave 540 very easily on the network.

I'm not too worried about loosing one fuction or the other. If the display craps out you got nuttin' anyways. I'll carry the old Pirhanna II just in case but where we boat (St. Lawrence River & Rideau Canal) there isn't too much you'll get in trouble with if you stay in the channels. I've chewed up enough props exploring in the past, those days are over.

The user interface takes a little getting used to but the last software update fixed a few bugs. If you get the G2 chip there's a few funky features, Fish Eye View and Mariners Eye View, which IMHO are just gimmicks the marketing guys demanded being put in there. The Fisheye view might be useful to fishers if the data in the charts is detailed enough.

Re: GPS and sounder combo

Some good points. Depth and fish finder are my main concern first. I can use the gps of gamin mobile xt on my phone for awhile.

I will be fishing in the chesapeake bay in a 19 runabout with I/O. So salt water will be the main course of the boats water apetite.

I am looking for a simple full featured unit, that would be the best bang for the bux. I will add the nav unit later, unless my phone works well once I install the blue charts to it. I want something that works great, but dont need to fight with the wife over the purchase either. Is there such a unit that delivers accuracy, good screen and price point?

I need to add, that space is also an issue since this is a small boat with limited space on the "dash board"

Re: GPS and sounder combo

we have the lowrance 337c - it is last years model (they are in 5 series this year). we love it - sounds comparible to the features of the garmin you describe (lowrance may even have a rebate offer running now - i know they had one earlier this year). it's worth a look in my opinion.

not a garmin hater - have a auto streetpilot love that too.

we shopped around for the gps/sonar combo and had our eye on the lowrance, then chose it one because we found a $700 unit for $350 (plus a store discount). love the combo and lowrance/boaters world offers an upgrade when we're ready to get a newer unit. if you're going to spend that amount of cash - make sure you have an incentive for upgrading. you know you'll want to upgrade someday...

Re: GPS and sounder combo

I would really compare the unit to the Lowrance LMS 525 C if you want a external GPS antenna or
Lowrance LMS 527 C if you want and internal gps anntenna.

Personaly I like the Lowrance 525 C the best.
Both the Garmin 540s and the Lowrance 525 C have 5 inch screens.
Garmin resoultion is 240 by 320 but Lowrance is 480 by 480 so lowrance has much higher resoultion.
This makes the screen more detailed and clear.
Both have the same power output.

One thing I do not like about the garmin 540s is it only has 20 routes which is fine if you go to the same places
all the time, but if you like me and fish all over the place it is not enough.
Lowrance 525 C has 100 routes.

Garmins biggest plus it it comes with preloaded maps.
Lowrance has better base maps than garmin but does not come with the detailed preloaded maps that Garmin has.
Lowrance does have a free card of your choice until July 2008 if you buy any of the 500 series units.
Comparing prices here at IBoats the Lowrance is $664 and the Garmin is $750

If you can find a store that has both units you should go to the store and compare.
One thing to do is zoom in and out and see how long it takes the screen to redraw.
All the Lowrance units I have seen were much faster than the same type garmin, they have a dual processor.
If you running in a stright line then speed does not make a big difference until you get close to your destination
and either auto zoom or manual zoom to get right on you spot.

If you running in track up mode or course up mode as I do most of the time then you may also find it takes a
really long time to redraw when you make a trun.

Lowrance resoultion is 480 by 480 so it you run in split screen mode the gps and the depthfinder will run in
240 wide by 480 high. The depth finder the vertical resoultion determins how much detail you can see.
In shallow water this does not make too much difference other that it looks nicer.
When you get in deep water then it makes a big difference in the size of fish you can see.

The Garmin resolution is 240 wide by 320 High and I belive when in split screen mode they split in the middle
of the screen. This would give you a Gps of 240 wide by 160 high and the same for the fish finder.
If this is the case then the lowrance would have 3 times the resoultion of the garmin.
That mean Lowrance could see a lot more fish in deep water.

If they split the other way then you would have a GPS screen size of 120 by 320 so would not have much
of the map displayed. The fishfinder would also be 120 wide by 320 high so could see more fish but
still only 2/3 of lowrance's resoultion. In this case the width or history is very small. So when looking at the
depth finder for structure, fish or weather the bottom is getting deeper or shallower your going to have to
watch closely as the returns will scroll off the screen very fast.

Garmin web site says it has NMEA 0183 which can be used to connect to your radio the enable the DSC fuction.

Lowrance Has NMEA 0183 also but also Has NMEA 2000, Eithernet, and RS232 so you can connect to
almost anything. This would be things like Fuel Flow sensor, Satellite Radio, Radar, Weather satellites, VHF radio.

Anyway looks at both Garmin and Lowrance before you buy.

The 540 isn't exactly small.

I like what Boatist said about the Lowrance, great info thnx. The Garmin has their own proprietary network "CANet" and NMEA 2000 network capability and you can hook in fuel flow sensors and satellite weather as well.

My buddy who's a Stratos sales rep has me leaning towards Lowrance for our next boat. It's amazing how fast this technology is evolving it's hard to keep up sometimes.

Re: GPS and sounder combo

I have an 18' bowrider and had run into the same concerns you have when trying to outfit the boat. On larger boats, the ability to network the GPS/sonar to other devices seems to be worthwhile, but on my small boat it's really not so I went with the Garmin 440s. It's significantly cheaper than the 540s with many of the same features regarding the GPS and sonar. It does have the NMEA in/out so you can connect to your VHF radio and if your radio has both in and out, you can see other boats on the GPS screen (that's my understanding of it anyway) but my radio is in only so I haven't been able to play with this.

I have very little room at the helm for a unit the size of the 440s but was able to make it work by fabricating a rail-mount and attaching it to the windshield support. I'm not sure if this would work on your boat, but it may be worth looking into.

I don't have a pic of the unit in the mount, but here's the mount...

I looked at the 440s, but boaters world has the 540s with the sounder for the same price at $699.

That's an awesome price for the 540s!! I got my 440s from www.shorewaymarine.com which is local for me. You have to add it to your cart to see the price, but if you're in the market for the 440s, the price is right.

Re: GPS and sounder combo

That's okay because I stole it from someone else... There's more pics and info at http://www.tombarcia.net/lottie-da/GPSMAP440s.htm but I will warn you that I had to machine the adapter between the rail mount I found and the GPS mount. The original idea that I stole used a RAM rail mount but I didn't like that because the shortest one I could find would have put the GPS 6" closer to me which is way too close.

Oh, and with the Garmin, if the mount is vertical like I have it, the unit will not tilt as the cable hits the mount. The RAM mount will probably not have this limitation.

Re: GPS and sounder combo

Stay away from the Humminbird 595C. I bought mine new and it's been back to the factory 5 times for 4 different problems. I haven't put my boat in the water yet this spring so don't know if it's going to work. It worked in the fall but last year in the spring it didn't. If it doesn't work, I'm out $500 because Humminbird as said it is out of warranty. I bought it in April 2006 and haven't had it on the boat for over a month without some problem.

I love my Lowrance color lms-332c Sonar/GPS combo. I can't compare it to any other though.
