I am looking for a good GPs/Depth finder to install on my boat. I am trying to keep it under $1000. I will be fishing in the Panama City bay and offshore in surrounding areas. I will not be fishing in more than 500 ft of water.

Anybody bought recently and really like there new system, or if someone is wanting to upgrade, I would be willing to buy a good quality/condition system.

Thanks, Paul

Re: GPS/Depth Finder Recommendations

I was at the Boston Boat show last week and they were liquidating the old garmin stock. New models already came out, so I got last years GPSMAPS 540s (with transducer for temperature/sounder/fish finder) for $483. Not bad considering it retailed for a lot more. Haven't used it in the water yet because my boat doesn't work too well in ice.

This is just my opinion.

I would rather have seperate units, having to settle for half a screen on an already small screen just doesn't cut it. Also if one unit breaks down the other still works.

I bought the Hummingbird with side imaging for fishing as well. It is a great unit, you can buy the navonics chips for a specific area. We use it all the time up in Canada and on a 60 mile long lake with lots of Big islands and jutties we have yet to get lost, and have never (knock on wood) yet one of those nasty Canadian rock fish. Great unit and can be had without side imaging for 650 or so. a bigger screen for a few dollars more.

I have a humminbird 161 GPS fish finder. It works pretty good walmart was clearing them out for $79. Does plotting and waypoints etc...

Grayscale screen tells you how fast your going, water temp.

There are several Lowrance units in your budget as well. I was checking out some today and l liked what I saw. (I am not in the market; just looking for entertainment..)
