I am looking at getting a low end GPS/Fishfinder combo, but I want to get the best bang for my buck. I am looking at the Humminbird 581i or the 365i.
If you have these would you recomend either one, or is there a better one out there?

I have a 797si and love it try calling SC Johnson's factory outlet (they own Hummingbird) in downtown Racine WI. I bought mine there at 1/2 price being a display at year end. $1300.00 unit with the external gps antenna for $599.00. try 262-631-6700 for the store. www.johnsonoutdoors.com for general info.they have a 967 series for 800.00 normally $1600.00

hummingbirds are pretty good for the money, from what i have seen they last pretty well. my personal favorite would be something from Garmin. their machines are easy to use, have great features, very few problems, and last a long time.

i do maintenance for a fleet of 65 boats and i can tell you from experience that raymarine and lowrance suck. they have a lot of problems and very poor product support.

Garmin products are also very good and reliable. I have the 2006 color chartplotter GPS and picked it up half price (new) on an eBay auction. Sometimes you score when the auction ends at 3:30 am!!

The nice thing about the Garmin is that their products are sold at every marine store and have great service areas all over the country. Plus, you don't have to have their proprietary products as most others will interface if you want a multifunction unit.

I have a Garmin too, a 178c color plotter sounder and I love it, the fish finder is super accurate as is the GPS and being color is really cool and the split screen is great, you can also choose what is diplayed on the screen, I have voltage, speed and time on my split screen.

Mine and Firemans are previous generation but the new ones are pretty much the same, I think the new model is like a 420.

What I like most about it is you don't need to take a college coarse on how to use it, the interface is really easy and it will tell you everything, total hours, time moving time sitting, top speed, average speed ect ect.

In the end it is your money, compare everything and see what works best for you.

I got you beat on getting a deal Fireman, I got mine through work, new in the box for $50, I am pretty shameless when it comes to getting a deal, I found this in a cabinet back in R&D and knew it was a couple years old, they can't put it on a new boat so I got the deal.

Found a 55lb Motorguide wireless trolling motor upstairs too, the thing had so much dust on it you could hardly tell what it was, turns out it was 3 years old and had never been on a boat, I got that for $100, I really like my job.
