Re: GPS INTERNAL VS. EXTERNAL ANTENAE
Dflorea
I agree with JB. Internal works pretty well with a couple of exceptions. It will work thru glass or a canvas top. It will not work thru aluminum window frames, or other electronic gear.

For the normal orbiting satellites internal will work well if unit has view of the sky thru windows or canvas tops. My portable even works in the car down on the seats or on the front dash.

The two USA WAAS birds Garmin number 35 and 47 are a little harder to pick up. These two correction birds are Geostationary so over the equator and harder to pick up especily if up north. The West coast can recieve both birds but the East coast can only get one, Atlantic ocean Region (AOR-West)(Garmin #35) at 54 degrees West longitude. The Pacific Ocean region (POR)(Garmin # 47) is at 178 degrees East Longitude.

With out the WAAS correction accuracy is about 9 meter or 30 feet at best. With the WAAS correction accuracy is 3 meters or 10 feet at best. I do not think many internal antennas pick up the two WAAS birds unless mounted in a very good location. The advantage to the external antenna is it is a better antenna and can be mounted where it has a better view of the horzion.
