I beleive my spedometer is a GPS type. There is a hot wire and then a wire that runs to a small red box mounted under the bow. There is nothing running to a pitot tube or anything going to the engine. The question is this, how accurate is it? It stopped workign a couple of times while underway and I am wondering if something might be loose. I dont really have much knowledge about this stuff so any and all help, advice, or anything would be great.

Re: GPS Spedometer

Never heard of a GPS that was only a speedometer, Deuce.

In order to calculate speed a GPS has to continuously calculate position. Doing that and then only displaying speed seems like using a satellite TV receiver to display only time.

Whatever, the speed displayed by a GPS is extremely accurate, to the 10th of a mph, kph or knot, but it is speed in 3 dimensional space, not speed in the water. On the water it would be speed over the earth's surface.

Re: GPS Spedometer

Travelling in a turn will take away from the accuracy because the device is measuring distance from one point to another over a period of time which is usually a few seconds. The distnces will be measured in a straight line, therefore making the speed reading a little inaccurate.

GPS receivers are a stand alone device. I have no idea why a wire goes to a bow box. The GPS only needs + and - power to it. MAYBE, the red box is reducing the +12 vdc to what the GPS needs? Call the Mfg.

The thing on the bow is probabably the GPS antenna.

Yeah I am kind of Confused, there is a titan series speedometer and a lil red box, no antenna, no markings and no recall switch. So friggin lost on this one I might scrap it.

its a 1970 avenger skiboat. I looked up the gauge brand and it looks like a norskog gps speedometer, i guess titan is one of their series. But it still seems to be missing stuff.

Most of the manufacturers are pretty good about providing phone help for situations like this...might want to ring them up.
Makes sense that a ski type gps speedometer wouldn't have the recall function...not much use for it on a ski boat.

Wow, shame you can't tap some kind of plotter into it . . . I know bowmar says it's common on performance boats, but to us poor fisher boys it seems like a waste of good high end tech!

It's be like using a massive international technical data network linking any and all information available to millions of universities, labs, homes and businesses around the world in mere seconds to look at porn or play video poker . . . OK, so maybe it's not so crazy!!!!(lol).

CC

Ah. but that is where you are wrong my friend ;) the fine folks at Livorsi Marine have solved this problem with their GPS TOURNAMENT SKI SPEEDO. included in the kit is the recall switch and bracket.

Thanks for clearing that up.....my involvement with water skiing is limited to the Bartlett Water Show at the Wisconsin Dells in 1970.

Re: GPS Spedometer

thats more then i have.. ;)

If you do plan on replacing your Speedo, I might recommend the Digital GPS unit. It will measure up to 200 MPH, but more importantly, will read speed in tenths. good for skiing.

Re: GPS Spedometer

So i took everyones advice and... its a gps speedo from nordskog and it is supposed to have a recall switch. Found the switch disconnected under the front seat of the boat so that accounts for it going dead. Thanks all for the input and that digital looks pretty sweet baja power
