So you can see well even though it is small. Which maps have you found to be the best for this device?

Yes, you can see it pretty well. Since the screens on most all of the handheld units are small anyway, you do have to look a bit harder (At least I do) to make out the small details. But it does have a zoom function that works very well and I have found it to be invaluable when traveling in unknown areas on the water at night. Very easy to save routes and tracks, as well as mark waypoints. Following a track back on a pitch black night is a very reassuring experience...I use Mapsource and really don't need any specifc fishing maps...

I have a 76CSx and I think it works great. You have to zoom in to get the finer details of the maps.

Re: GPSMap 76???

I have had a Garmin GPSMAP 76 since the year it first came out and it works very well but today I would not even think of Buying one.

They down graded the Base Map so much that it hard to even recognize San Francisco Bay. The screen is so dim that most of the time in the car while driving you can not take your eyes off the road long enough to read.

Before your buy Look at the Lowrance Ifinder H2O C or the
Lowrance Ifinder H2O.
I just bought the Lowrance H2O C to use in place of my GPSMAP 76.

The base map is much better than Garmin.

The screen is a little bigger.

The Screen is a lot brighter.

It finds a postion when turned on twice as fast as the garmin.

The Lowrance has a dual processor and is much faster, maps redraw in less than two seconds while the Garmin can take 2 minutes to fully redraw. At West Marine zoom in or out on both units and watch how long it takes to redraw on the garmin.

The trails and a lot eaiser to see.

In the car I can see it very easy where impossible to see the Garmin while driving.

If you think you need the upgraded maps they are cheaper.

The unit it self if Cheaper.

It comes with a Lighter power plug free. Garmin wants $40.

It has a memory card slot for 1GB Sd card. Garmin has none.

It has 16 channels instead of 12 on the garmin.

Inside my home it will often get 4 or more channels where the garmin never gets any.

The button are below the screen so you can change without covering up the screen.

Only thing I like better on the garmin is the batteries are a little eaiser to change.

If you Look at both and Choose the Garmin I hope you will come back and explain why.

Re: GPSMap 76???

You can't compare the 76 with the H2O, I mean, you just did. But is not apple to apple. The H2O is a better unit as it is a newer unit. I highly recomend Garmin. For one thing, their customer support is unsurpased. but I would recomend a newer unit like the 60 series.
Another thing, try to get you unit locally if you can and make sure you can return the GPS if not satisfied. I went thru 3 units, including the H2O before finding the unit I liked. Everything looks and sounds great on paper, until you try it. Good luck.
