I am in the process of restoring a 1972 chesapeak, Just aboutfinished the transom replacement and need to replace all the stringers. The hull has a wood core much of the old fiberglass has detached from the core the stringers have been removed but there is no present fiberglass left as a pattern for them. My questions are can I just glass over the old glass using mat and poly resin, and how important is it to keep the new stringers identical to the original. Have alot of work done and much more ahead, appreciate any thoughts. t/y wav

Re: grady restoration

When you say the hull has a "wood core", are you really talking about the hull or just the stringers? I know the stringers in the grady's from that era were wood encapsulated in glass.

The stringers need to be at least the same height and thickness as the originals. Is there any original portion remaining in the boat? If not, it is not too hard to determine.

Since you will want a good bond to the remaining structure and the hull, I personally would use epoxy instead of polyester resin.

Pictures would help the board members a lot. Everyone loves seeing the projects. It also gives responders a chance to see what you are describing.

Some of the fiberglass is left on the port side but not enough to get orginal height, starboard side has wood left but this was a re-do by someone in the past not orginal. I am thinking that I can probally get a general idea from whats left just wanted to know how exact they have to be to what was orginal. There is only rot where the keel was what would i use in that area? ty wav
