I would like to change my oil over to Pennzoil 10-30 syntec from Esso extra 5-30.
Should I stick to 5-30 weight or is 10-30 syntec OK?

Regards....J C.

Haven't used the Pennzoil full synthetic. Use Mobil 1 in my Mercedes.

The last vehicle I had that ever used petrolubes was a '95 Ford Windstar. When I switched to the Mobil 1 fuel mileage improved 2mpg and change intervals went from 3K to 5K miles.

I assume that you mean the Mercury Grand Marquis.

If Mercury says to use 5-30, use 5-30.

I would use mobile 1 or amsoil. I avoid all penzoil/quaker state oil products.

if your mercury only has 15,000 miles on it i assume that it is fairly new check your oil cap i bet it says 5w-20 i think ford motor co. switched to that in the late 90's or early 2000's on there 6 and 8 cyl 5w-20 is a synthetic

Re: Grand Marque oil change to synthetic

Sorry ne7800 but just because the oil has a SAE rating of 5w-20 does not make it a synthetic.
Also, both Honda and Ford suggest 5w-20 oils, but that thin of a viscosity has proved to be not good in the warmer climates.
This is a link to a synthetic oil manufacturer who I had saved years ago because of the breakdown of SAE ratings and a good overall discription of the refining process.
Gets a little technical, but again has covered all the bases concerning regular and synthetic oils.

Yes, 5-20 or 5-30 whatever your oil fill cap says.

The Triton (4.6L) engines DO NOT like thick oil.

Ok first off i wasn't saying that just because it was 5w-20 it was synthetic I have been in/around the auto body repair buissness all my life so i know a little about engins, the first time i seen 5w-20 was on a ford E-150 that my mother used for her buisness i asked my brother-in-law (who happens to be a Ford seinor master tech) because i had never seen it before and he is the one that told me it was synthetic

Good post, one thing not to well known was Ford's move to lower viscosity oil's was heavliy based on C.A.F.E. std's..aka lighter resistance or less restrictive oil improved fuel economy (Theroy) spread of hundred's of thousand's of vehicles gave them a higher average corporate fuel econ.....Just a damm number's game but very real...

In other word's they could sell more big trucks with less fines...or potential fine's ...go figure...;)

As soon as our fleet of vehicles are out of warranty we swap them to 15w40 and never have any oil related problems like we do leaving them on 5w30

We also run 15-40 in our 4.6 Ford fleet cars and have never had an oil related engine failure that I can think of.

Link...Link.....ahhh there you are..

Also mentions the disadvantages of using 5w-20

Doesn't say that it is only available as a synthetic either.

Also thanks tailgunner, that bob's oil link is just as busy. Lots of good stuff to see there.

What's up phil..seems as tho ya got some Buffet lyrics in ya. Funny how that happens. Been at enough concerts with my hands over my head singin " Fins to the left, Fins to the right"

Anyway, sounds like good material for another thread!!

Steinhatchee seven were just afew good ol boys who got caught with only nine tons of weed.

They sure ended up with a lot of money stuffed in coolers, all had new fishing boats and lived it up pretty good.
