We would like to try to start our old car.
http://www.geocities.com/kenimpzoom/38LaSalle.html

We dont have a gas tank or fuel pump.

We were thinking of securely mounting a gas can on the roof and using gravity to feed the carb.

We only want to get the engine running, not drive it.

Do yall think gravity will allow enough flow to feed the engine at low rpms?

Thanks, Ken

You could use your outboard tank take fill end off and attached right to the carb inlet line and clamp it ,that way you could increase the pressure if you wanted to

If the carb float is working okay sure you can do it. A cheap electric fuel pump would help too.

Bob

The can on the roof will work or If you just want to see if it will fire up you can just fill the float bowl through the tube that sticks up in the center of the carb.I used to buy old junk cars and doodle bugs all the time just for the challenge of getting them running.

Ken, have you tried www.kanter.com for a pump or kit for the existing one on the engine

laddiesservice thanks for the info. We have already bought a bunch of stuff from Kanters

We have the old mechanical pump but we prefer an electric. Mechanical pumps vapor lock too much.

I was yahoo searching all day, then I did a google search and found this. Fuel Pump

Why not a good old voltage converter to step up to 12V?

OR

Convert the entire system to 12V and step the voltage down for the starter.

Bob

Gravity feed should work just fine. All of the carburated high wing aircraft use gravity feed and some of them have up to 180 hp engines. The suggestion to use your portable outboard tank is a good one.
Bill...

A friend of mine in high school had an old chevy truck. He used an old beer keg behind the cab for his feul tank. Problem, the tank was higher than the carb. It flooded over when the truck sat for a while. Needed to add an electric pump and a regulator to the line.
I have ran old cars like you say for a few minutes at a time. It does work.
The day I picked up my last race car, it didn't have a gas tank yet. The guy I bought it from was not very trustworthy. As soon as I paid for the car I wanted to get it moved, but I had no trailer and no gas tank. I used a 5 gallon bucket. Filled it with gas and stuck a feul line in the bucket hooked the other end to the pump. It worked to drive 25 miles home on the back roads.
Wouldn't recommend this though.
Anyway, your idea will work just watch in case the carb starts flowing over out the bowl vents.
