Today I decided to get my boat ready for my yearly vacation. I changed the lower unit oil with fresh screws and gaskets. Clean off the engine block and lubricated all appropriate areas. I had to run some water in the engine compartment since there was debris where I couldn't reach it from a chipmunk that got inside. =p I learned my lesson and will seal every hole!

I lightly decarbed. I used a little seafoam decarb not the whole can. I also checked the gap on the plugs there were down to .025 from .030. I gapped them to .030

The first time I started it before all maintenance there was no sludge. The second time I started the motor there was a lot of gray sludge coming out the exhaust. Is this normal?

The only thing I did different this year by mistake is put the vent plug back in for the Lower Unit oil and then pressed on my lube hand pump. Could I have blown a seal? How much pressure can the Lower unit handle? It wasn't that much extra oil and some seeped out from the fill / drain hole anyway.

Should I drain the Lowerunit oil and inspect it? The oil didn't really need to be changed it looked brand new with a little dark spots and very little metal at the mangnetic plug.

** Almost forgot. The first tank of the season I always over mix for the first start. So there is plenty of lube so I don't have any problems. I put 1.5 pints to 6 gallons. Not sure what ratio but that might also cause the sludge?????

It's normal - just unburned oil from the exhaust finding a low spot.

It means your engine is properly lubed. Now, get on the water and feel good about it.
