Grease for the prop shaft? Does it matter?

2004 SX-M single prop. Been using the volvo grease the manual calls for but the stuff is super expensive. I have some Quicksilver Extreme Grease (used on the drive shaft splines) and it's the same cost but I get about 10 times as much. Is this ok to put on the prop splines? Also debated just using red and tacky wheel grease on it. I pull my prop about 4 times a year to check for fishing line.

The volvo greas is $10.20 for 25 grams
Quicksilver is $12.94 for 227 grams

Use what ever kind of cheap grease on the splines, just trying to keep it from corroding up and getting stuck. Pull the prop once a season to inspect and re-grease

Will say I'm fresh water

Thanks Alldodge. Kind of what I was thinking. I'm in freshwater as well. Just hate spending $10 for a tiny tube.

Most the time I use Super Tech Marine grease from Walmart at less then $4 for the full size tube

OMC/Bombardier/Evinrude triple guard grease. The best and reasonably priced.

Grease is grease . . . Best to use a marine grease which does better in the water.

I also like the OMC Triple Guard grease. Used it for years.
