Grease + Lube Question

Hey everyone,

I've got a few quick questions. I'm working on obtaining all the grease/lube/liquids to do my own maintenance in the future.

1.) OMC says to use OMC Marine Wheel Bearing Grease for greasing the U joints and gimbal bearing. I can't find anyone selling this. (I've been able to find most other items) Can I just use the triple guard grease for this also? Or, I've got some Lucas wheel bearing grease (red stuff), would that be better? Or is there some other stuff I should buy?

2.) OMC calls for OMC Outboard Lubricant for the 2 o-rings on the driveshaft.. uhh.. what I can use in replacement of that?

3.) Evinrude Hi-Vis is the right stuff for the drive/gear-case lube?

Re: Grease + Lube Question

If you find a Mercury/Mercruiser dealer or Quicksilver dealer in your area, get some Ujoint & Gimbal bearing grease
Also get some Spline grease for use on the splines going into the coupler.
You csn use either one of those to lube those Orings.
You can also use Mercs Hi Performance gear lube in the drive. It's fully synthetic and works just as well as the Hi-Vis. And yes, the Hi Vis is the OMC recommended gear lube.

Re: Grease + Lube Question

Ok, so here's my list...

1.) OMC Hi-Vis Gearcase Lube = Use Mercury High Performance Gear Lube instead.

2.) OMC Triple Guard Grease = Evinrude/Johnson Triple Guard Grease

3.) OMC Gasket Sealing Compound = Evinrude/Johnson Gasket Sealing Compound

4.) OMC Marine Wheel Bearing Grease = Use Mercury U-joint & Gimbal Bearing Grease instead

5.) OMC Outboard Lubricant = Not needed?

6.) Mercury Spline Grease for splines

7.) SAE 30 oil for engine.

Any that I'm missing? Or should that cover my basic maintenance on the boat?

Re: Grease + Lube Question

Yep, that ought to work.
One thing, you CAN use those Merc equivilants if you want. Use the Merc ujoint and GB grease on the Ujoints and gimbal bearing. I wouldn't use it on wheel bearings.
Spark plugs (I don't answer mechanical questions in PM's) use a cross reference for the Champion plugs. Just don't use the Champions (IMHO)
