I have doing some reading and research on the web and I am justing wanting to get some input. I am wanting know which is better the original grease bearing system or the oil hub bearing system. The last time I saw a Ranger Boat Trailer I noticed it had Oil-Bathed bearings and I didn't know how they were working out. I have been thinking about maybe going to a oil bearing system, but I hate to say I have NEVER had a problem with the original grease system. I don't know if I am even going to spend the money on it but it has crossed my mind.

Any input???

Ayuh,.... Ding, ding, ding,... Bingo ! ! ! !...

If the cash is burnin' a Hole in you're pocket,... Go ahead...

Personally, I have No problem with Grease hubs...

A Grease hub that leaks will get ya Home with minor difficulties...
An Oil hub that leaks will be Junk in only a few miles...

I think the work well, but am with bond-o, what if ???

The problem I have with oil bath hubs, it that they stick oil past the wheel and tire. We often travel old overgrown logging roads in Canada, I fear the oil bath cap would get smashed on a rock or log.

Wasn't this the topic of a thread a day or two ago? You might want to check that thread instead of having everything rehashed again.

For a work trailer that I use everyday the oil bath hubs are good... but my boat will sit for weeks at a time in the winter - bearing half out of the oil with a chance for rust and corrosion aggravated by being dunked in the water.

If it makes you feel better, there isn't an 18 wheeler cruising the highways of this great country that doesn't have it's running gear lubricated with oil.....how's that for will it work and BTDT....it works?

On a boat trailer it's perfect, absolutely perfect, and today I was cruising the Ranger site and stumbled across it and went nuts.............absolutely nuts.

It's perfect for a marine application for two reasons (why do you think Ranger would have incorporated it in the first place if it wasn't the right answer) (had one of them too; Rangers that is):

1. There is a volume of air over the oil so any changes in volume caused by driving down a steaming hot Interstate Highway in the Summer, and then instantly immersing the bearings in cool water are instantly compensated for.....no sucking in launch water when the bearings and lube suck up from the change in temp like what happens with conventional grease lubes....Bearing Buddies or not....they help, but the problem still exists.

2. The oil covers the whole system. You don't have to worry as to whether or not the inner bearing is being lubed because you can see the lube level and it goes through the entire hub.

If I were buying a boat, especially if I were a tournament guy, or a family guy who had to travel many miles to get to the playground, I wouldn't have anything else.

Am I sold on them? Naw just convinced.

Ayuh,... I drove 1 for over 10 years,...
I've been workin' on 'em since Before then,+ Still do....
NONE of them are dunked in cold water...

With the air in the cavity, when dunked in Cold water it creates a vacuum,+ can Still suck in water....

Thanks, but No thanks... Boat trailers work just Fine with Grease hubs,+ bearing buddies.....

That's what forums are for. Differences of opinions, experiences.

Problem is, Norman New Guy is trying to sort out fact from fiction.

And as far as you masters of the course, I think your answers totally suck!!!!!!!

I have often thought of replacing mine as well. Never had a problem either. The only reason would be to have a quick visual on what's happening, maybe less maintenance. This thread offered comments I had never considered.

Looks like a no-brainer now.

Grease works. If it leaks, you still get home.

Oil MAY leak out and have catastophic results.

So, why would anybody want oil?

Re: Grease or Oil????

My boat trailer came with oil bath hubs and I haven't had a problem to date. Mind you I only travel 5 miles to the ramp and back at city street speeds so I'm good to go in that aspect. I change the oil once a year to keep everything fresh so we don't have any problems.
